WQKR 101.7FM / 1270AM

WQKR 101.7FM / 1270AM WQKR is a community-oriented “hometown” radio station in Portland, serving all of Northern Middle Tennessee and South Central Kentucky.

Our signal is clearly heard from Nashville to Bowling Green (north/south) and Springfield to Lafayette (east/west), and on 91.5 FM and 1270 AM. The people who listen to us are the people who are involved in the community, and want to keep up with what is happening in their hometown. The focus of our 24-hour broadcast day is on our live local shows: “Good Morning, Portland,” Monday through Friday f

rom 7:00 until 9:00 a.m. with Don Curry and Dale Sprouse and “The Women’s Roundtable” at 4:00 p.m. Everyone who wants to know what’s going on in the community listens to these programs. Because our area has only weekly newspapers, WQKR is the only daily source of local news for area residents. The music we play is a format called “Classic Hits,” and consists of the top hits from the music charts between 1965 and 1995. Pop and rock music that everyone 35 and over can recognize or remember, and younger listeners also enjoy. Because our primary goal is to serve the community, we have local news every hour along with national news, sports and a community events calendar, plus the “Traders Post” and area obituaries. As Portland’'s radio station, we are the voice of the Portland High School football and basketball Panthers, and broadcast their games and coaches’ shows throughout the year. All Panther games are also streamed live on the Internet on our website, www.wqkr.com. We are also the only radio station in Sumner County to broadcast University of Tennessee football and basketball games, the Indy 500 and Allstate 400, the Super Bowl, March Madness and much more. The residents of this area listen to our radio station because we give them news and programming they cannot get anywhere else---news about them, their friends and their family, and their community.

West and Middle Tennessee as well as Southern Kentucky areas in the yellow zone need to stay weather-aware this Wednesday! While the main severe activity is focused to the west, our region is in the open warm sector, meaning storm development is uncertain. However, if storms do form, they could quickly become intense and long-tracked tornadoes.

What to Watch For:

Potential for isolated severe storms

Tornadoes could be strong and long-lived if storms develop

Conditions will evolve—stay updated!

Be sure to have multiple ways to receive warnings and be prepared to take action if storms develop in our area. I’ll be monitoring this system closely and will provide updates as needed!

Who We Are

WQKR has been Portland's radio station since 1980. For 39 years we have informed, entertained and served as the voice of our community under a number of different owners.

Our current ownership bought the station in 2004. Since that time we have gone from a daytime to a 24-hour station, increased the power and added an FM station to better serve all of the listeners in northern Middle Tennessee, serving not just Portland, but also White House, Westmoreland, Orlinda, Cross Plains, and parts of both Sumner and Robertson County in Tennessee and Franklin and Simpson County in Kentucky.

We are the people's radio station, and our primary goal is to serve the broadcast needs of everyone who lives and works in our coverage area. Bringing necessary information to all of our listeners, and telling their story to everyone else who needs to know what is happening in Portland and the surrounding area. We have two daily live local talk shows: “Good Morning, Portland” from 7:00-9:00 a.m. and “Portland P. M.” from 4:00-6:00 p.m., and five local talk shows every Saturday from 7:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. The rest of each day we feature the best of rock and roll oldies, primarily from the 60’s and 70’s.
