Mid-October in 2006, I entered this building for the first time, climbed six stories with a crate of records and cd's, and broadcast the first episode of my show, It's a nice world to visit. 18 years later I still "show up" every week and do my best to put together a selection of different songs that will be entertaining, and hopefully uniquely strung together in a way that only I might do. Sure I tend to feature a lot of my favorite bands quite often, week after week, but I like to think it is how the songs come together that keep people tuning in and listening.
Sadly this anniversary happens to come a few days after I received the news that a friend of mine has died from cancer. We were not as close as I might have wished, in truth I found him intellectually intimidating, and very very cool. When we became acquainted he was fronting the band, The Welfare State, who I thought were one of the better bands in Portland, and I played them on the radio quite often. I loved going to see them play and enjoyed speaking with Eric. We shared a lot of the same favorite bands, and for me that is often the strongest foundation for any friendship. One of my favorite memories is the night his band and another local band, Magnetic Health Factory played together and I deejayed that night, to celebrate my 50th birthday.
This week on my show, I think I will likely make selections that I think Eric might enjoy, almost as if I was deejaying at a bar, before his band might be getting ready to take the stage.
The show will be broadcast from 2 to 4 PM PST, on Freeform Portland, and can be heard on 90.3 / 98.3 FM in the Portland metro area, and streamed from the web site: www.freeformportland.org
