It's true that we closed our retail store, offices and warehouse in downtown Portland at the end of 2020, but for the last several months we've been toiling away at the huge project of moving ourselves out of there for good. Last Monday at midnight, we finally swept up, put one last load in the car and locked the doors behind us – saying goodbye to the building that was our home for the last six decades, and of course to downtown Portland where we'd spent all of our 100 years at various locations.

Not an easy transition, but a necessary one, and there is a certain relief that comes with finally getting the job done. We want to thank our customers who've trusted us with their business, and our employees through the years who kept things running in good times and not-so-good. We want to emphasize, though, that our legal forms business lives on at www.stevensness.com – order our forms electronically there for quick and easy access. Or if you prefer paper forms, we're in the process of revitalizing our network of dealers throughout Oregon and Washington who offer them this way (see "Paper Forms Dealers" on our site).

We send our best to everyone reading this post in these difficult times, and please – support your local, independent businesses whenever and however you can. They need it now more than ever.

Hi there. I’m a beautiful, sturdy vintage oak desk, and right now I live at a downtown store that recently closed. How old am I? Nobody actually knows for sure, but since this business was 100 years old when it closed, I’ve definitely been around a long time. Watched the rise of automobiles, saw the reign of typewriters and adding machines (like this pretty Burroughs model sitting atop me), and then saw those replaced by computers. Listened to printing presses churning away daily here, until they went away and a big fancy laser something or other showed up in their place. After all that time I’m not in perfect shape, but I still look pretty dang good; a little attention and I’d be a showpiece again. Look, I’ve even got these sweet cutting boards! Also, there are two others like me here. Any chance you have an office, den, bonus room that could use the sweet, oaky ambiance we can provide? Send Stevens-Ness a private message and make them an offer; you won’t regret it. But hey, you’ll be responsible for hauling me…and you’d better bring some strong mask-wearing friends and a suitable vehicle. They don’t make ‘em like me anymore.

Well, folks…that's all she wrote. At 2:00 PM today, December 31, 2020, Stevens-Ness closed our downtown retail store permanently. Effective immediately we are no longer selling office supplies and furniture, nor are we offering fingerprinting, notary public or passport services.

We have also ceased printing and selling paper legal forms, BUT – we will continue to offer our high-quality, always-accurate forms in electronic format at stevensness.com. We are currently completing development of our redesigned website and it will go live sometime on Friday, Jan. 1, 2021. So please continue coming to us for all of your Oregon and Washington legal form needs! It's what we've been doing for 100 years, after all.

Happy New Year to all of our customers; we appreciate your support so very much, and we wish you health and happiness in 2021 and beyond. May we all breathe just a little easier as we turn this particular page of the calendar.

As Dec. 31 draws near, we're slashing our prices even lower to clear out inventory before our retail store closes for good. Today we bring you some news that we wouldn’t have seen coming just a year ago: Stevens-Ness will close our downtown retail store and cease business as an office supplies retailer on December 31, 2020. It’s no secret that operating a profitable brick-and-mortar retail business is a challenge…particularly this year, and particularly in our location. We’re at least taking some comfort in the knowledge that operating continuously in downtown Portland for 100 years is a very good run.

Beginning January 1, 2021 we will operate as a digital-forms-only business at stevensness.com; we will no longer publish paper forms or sell office supplies.

However, our sad news means good news and great savings for you – because we need to clear the substantial inventory from our store. To do so, we’re giving you a 20% discount on EVERYTHING in stock, even items that are already on sale. Come see us at 916 SW 4th Ave. downtown – we’d love to see you – and check out all the bargains. This discount is limited to items already in stock; all sales are final.

In recent years we’ve moved away from writing letters and sending cards to stay in touch; we tend to use email and social media instead.
