Book donations needed!! Each fall we do a little project we call "Books Behind Bars". We collect and sort gently used books for facilities in Cumberland and Androscoggin Counties. Then deliver them before the end of September.

This year, we are all set for children's books, but we need lots of books for adult readers. Biographies, mysteries, poetry, general/popular fiction, thrillers, popular history, classics, etc.

If you have GENTLY used books you'd like to donate, please message us here or email to [email protected]

Thank You!!

I wouldn’t say our warehouse shelves are exactly empty, but they are about to be filled and readied for our “ABC” project kick off Fall of 2025.

Give the Gift of Reading this Summer - Thanks to the wonderful employees at Books-A-Million South Portland, like Abby and Natalie, BAM's Book Drive to Benefit Altrusa is in full swing!

Shop any time from now until August 17 at the South Portland, ME store. When you check out, you will be asked if you would like to purchase and donate a book for a child. If you say yes, those books will come to us. Please help us resupply for the upcoming school year. Thank you!!

We work hard to get those books into the hands of children in need around the Greater Portland Area. Through our ABC Reading Program, we read in kindergarten classrooms and each child gets to choose a "forever" book - theirs to take home and keep. We provide books to Middle School libraries around the area. We also fulfill requests from local non-profits who request books through our website at https://www.altrusaportland.org/ Select the top menu option Request Books.

At Altrusa International convention, we had the great pleasure of meeting and hearing from Raychel of Ray of Sunshine, TCC.
She is a life coach and so much more. She left us feeling inspired and “ ENOUGH”.
