Want to escape the crowds, and save money? Try night skiing

The opportunity to ski under lights until 7 or even 9 p.m., when the slopes are less crowded, offers a kind of snow-globe experience, where the surrounding landscape disappears in darkness and all that’s visible is the illuminated trail ahead and the lifts running above.

The vast majority of Maine Alpine areas offer night skiing – and nearly half offer deals that top the day ticket pass.

This was the third year I contributed to our Mainers to Be Thankful For profiles for Thanksgiving. This series exemplifies so many of the reasons I love Maine.

Two wildlife lovers were strangers until they united to rescue a great black hawk in Deering Oaks during a January snowstorm.

“We are in serious negotiations that are ongoing with Arctaris. That’s the extent of our comment on Saddleback. But I would say we are in serious negotiations.”

Forest bathing catching on around coastal Maine

After hearing a feature on this relatively new therapy on NPR this summer, I was skeptical this would be interesting - chiefly because the NPR reporter kind of mocked it. But like all activities I've experienced in the Maine outdoors, forest therapy is fascinating. Plus you're hanging out in the outdoors for three hours... When is that ever bad?

The therapy that began in Japan is spreading around the globe – including here.

Bill to allow deer-baiting shot down in committee - Portland Press Herald

I haven't covered the Legislature in a while, eventhough I got my start as an outdoor reporter covering the State House. I was glad I got there early to look around. Plus my steel-toe logging boots didn't get through security.

Opponents see several reasons to retain Maine's prohibition on using bait to hunt deer, among them that there is no resource management benefit to allowing it.

“The Crooked is the arterial life blood of Sebago,” Hidell said. “We are very salmon-centric as anglers, but we like to think of the bigger picture, too. And protecting the Crooked also helps provide clean, clear water to Sebago.” Yes! This is why we are working so hard to protect land along the Crooked River.

Learn more about the threats to the Crooked River's wild salmon population—development, climate change, and barriers to fish passage—in this informative article. Thanks, Deirdre Fleming-Portland Press Herald!
