I flew home and said it all again:
went door
to door, street
to street, to all the squares of the city
fingernails snagging in sleeves, anything
to get their attention and make them listen

WASH DAY
The buckets drain
onto concrete, I pour
out the lye,
the murky water
of wasted time.
I stretch the line
from tree to tree.

A black Russian sedan with white drapes
rolls prowling down the street
and stops at my door.

A bristle,
not wafted in
by summer,
sticks itself fast
in my throat.
