Mohamed Doumbia “Enregistrement Live No Limit Bamako” out today! Recorded a few years back on a trip to Mali, where I happened to cross paths with Mohamed Doumbia and his phenomenal band playing in a small neighborhood bar in the capital. They played late into the night, playing in a timeless style that harkens back to the golden age of Malian music - still very much a living music scene. 🇲🇱

New release from Mohamed Doumbia, leader of Orchestre Badema, with his full band of golden era Mali music.

This record pays tribute to one of the most intoxicating and globally recognized genres from Mali: the West African “orchestras” from the late 1960s and 1970s. Blending soulful vocals, psychedelic infused solos, and invigorating rhythms, the golden age of Malian music gave rise to Salif Keita, Kante Manfila, and Mady Casse. While these sounds are often heard through archival recordings from another era, the spirit of the tradition lives on today in the hidden neighborhood bars of Bamako.

Mohamed Doumbia and his group have weekly residencies at No Limit in Bamako - concerts that start well after midnight and continue for hours. Performing for an older audience, Doumbia belts out unwavering vocals, voyaging through both classics and traditional epics in a hypnotic journey. He’s joined by a supergroup of musicians, featuring standout guitarist Adama Dramé and Baba Coulibaly.

Pre-order up now, limited vinyl of 250 coming April 3.

Bounaly, Malian guitar hero, in Bamako wedding. Raised in Niafounke, Mali under the influence of Afel Boucoum and Ali Farka, Bounaly started playing guitar at the age of 10. Fleeing to Bamako during the 2012 conflict, he’s become a figure in the capital, known for his shredding Takamba style guitar.
