In 2025, traveling to inclusive cities is more important than ever, especially in the USA. So we ran Portland, Maine back 🔄 to see if it passes the Green Book Global seal of approval when it comes to inclusivity, especially for Black travelers.
This time we wanted to dig deeper into the community, and let me tell you! If you haven’t started planning your trip yet… what are you doing??? 🤣
Here are 7 new ways to that are rooted in community and 100% worth adding to your next visit:
🏨 First, you have to stay somewhere, right? We recommend the , perfectly placed so you get both the views and the vibe of Old Port.
✊🏾 Take a Black History Walking Tour with and explore stories you didn’t learn in school. Learn from 9th generation Black Mainers who lead the tours!
🦞 Learn lobstering with Lift All Boats, where there’s a particular emphasis on teaching underrepresented communities how to lobster and turn it into a career. Then head to , which uses proceeds to support the program.
⚽️ Catch a Hearts of Pine soccer game and yes, Maine has a pro soccer team! The energy is real, fans are loyal, and the players are way more diverse than we expected.
🐐 Try Goat Yoga! Are you a yoga fan… or just a goat fan? Then this mindful and playful yoga experience with goats is something to add to your list.
🌱 Volunteer at New Roots Cooperative Farm in Lewiston, an immigrant-led farm feeding local communities and growing fresh food and futures.
🦪 Tour the water with Nauti Sisters Oyster Farm , a woman-owned oyster business where you’ll learn how they’re grown (and slurp the freshest ones you’ve ever had straight from the water).
⛵️ Learn to sail with the nonprofit Sail Maine — whether you want to hop on a boat or just watch local youth learning this incredible skill, it’s a vibe.
