Four brothers with a combined 31 years of fighting with each other put their fighting efforts on full display this afternoon for the 3rd Annual Turkey Bowl that saw the Adults survive to escape with a 32-26 victory.
A windy, damp field at the old Parkview Elementary in Jackson was the site for the third straight year of what would be the closest game of the three-year series. The game is played on a field estimated to be approximately 30 yards long and 15 yards wide. All participants must wear a football jersey & cleats are prohibited.
The Adults are highlighted by a veteran roster in Eric & Kendall, each who have played big roles for the Adults the last few years. The Kidsโ were led today by 11-year-old, Connor; Kaiden (9), Dallan (8), and Jackson (3).
Handling the all-time QB duties for todayโs contest was Uncle Bub.
The Adults won the coin toss and would take the football first to begin the game. A fourth down connection connection from Uncle Bub to Eric would set up an eventual score from the Adults to give them an early 6-0 lead following the missed 2-point attempt.
The Kidsโ first drive showed promise, but they would ultimately turn the ball over on downs deep in Adults territory. The ensuing play, Kendall took a toss sweep 25 yards before Uncle Bub would connect with Eric the next play on a jump ball over Dallan, giving the Adults the 12-0 following another failed 2-point conversion.
The Kids responded on their second drive, cutting the score in half after Bub connected with Connor on a 7-yard touchdown throw.
The Kidsโ momentum would be sliced before the half after Kendall hauled in a deep pass that set up another Eric TD grab extending the Adults lead to 20-6 at halftime.
The Kids came out of halftime on fire after Bub connected with Connor on a 25-yard TD pass to open the half. The score cut the Kidsโ deficit to 20-12 for the moment until Kendall would reel in a TD grab from Uncle Bub as he (somewhat athletically) avoided the rush of Dallan. Another failed 2-point attempt by the Adults would keep the score at 26-12.
The next three series would result in turnovers as Eric jumped on a fumble to get the ball back to the Adults before Uncle Bub threw an eventual interception to Kaiden before the Kids would eventually turn it over on downs.
With six minutes to go in the game, the Adults got the ball back looking to score. After a strong start to the drive highlighted by a long pass from Uncle Bub to Kendall, the Adults drive would stall out giving the ball back to the Kids where they would begin their march to a comeback!
In their sixth drive of the game, Bub connected with Kai on a 10-yard TD strike to slice the deficit to 26-18, but the Kids werenโt done.
The Adults next play from scrimmage, Uncle Bub dropped back to throw and as he pulled the throwing arm back, he lost the ball right into the hands of a rushing Connor in the Adultsโ endzone for a Kidsโ touchdown, making the score 26-24 in favor of the Adults. The next play, Dallan reeled in an impressive catch that tied the game at 26-26 with only 40 seconds to go.
With the game in the balance, it was time for the Uncle Bub & Eric connection one final time. With Kendall double-covered on the backside, Eric reeled in a pass to get the Adults within striking distance before calling a timeout. Two plays later, the Adults would fire the decisive shot when Uncle Bub connected with Eric one final time with one second to go, giving the Adults the 32-26 advantage.
The Kids would get the ball back one final time for an attempt at a Hail Mary that came up just short giving the Adults the victory by the final score of 32-26.
The Turkey Bowl MVP was awarded to Connor (11) who had three scores on the day, including the late sack-fumble-recovery, which helped tie the game.
Kaiden finished the day with 6 catches, 1 TD reception and an interception.
Dallan finished the afternoon with 5 catches, including the 2-point conversion reception that tied the game.
The Adults now lead the series 3-0 all-time.
