The house was empty, the laughter gone. But on the porch, a dog named Cupid waited. He didn’t understand where his family went—only that this was the place they always came back to. So he stayed, through rain and cold nights, a loyal pit bull keeping watch over a home that was no longer his.
Neighbors in Harrisburg saw him there, day after day, and reached out for help. That’s how Janine Guido of Speranza Animal Rescue found him—scavenging near a dumpster, ribs showing, eyes nervous. But when he saw her, he didn’t run away. He ran back to that front porch and scratched desperately at the door, as if begging to be let inside.
It took patience and a gentle voice, but finally Cupid allowed Janine to approach. She slipped a leash around his neck, and he didn’t resist. On the drive to the rescue, he leaned close, soothed by the sound of kindness he hadn’t heard in weeks.
Now at Speranza, Cupid is learning to trust again. He has warm blankets, plenty of food, and people who greet him with smiles. He’s still hesitant—afraid joy might vanish—but every day he wags his tail a little more.
Soon, he’ll be ready for a forever home. Janine knows it won’t take long. “He’s got a heart that still believes in people,” she says.
Cupid isn’t waiting on that porch anymore. He’s waiting for a new beginning—for someone who will see the loyalty in his eyes and promise never to leave him behind again.
