GREAT NEWS! The Governor's Regulatory Review Council approved an Outstanding Arizona Water (OAW) designation for portions of the Upper Verde River on September 1, 2026.

The designation recognizes the Upper Verde's exceptional:
–ecological significance
–recreational value
–cultural significance
–habitat for threatened and endangered species

An OAW is the highest level of water quality protection the AZ Dept of Environmental Quality assigns to surface waters. With this designation, the Upper Verde’s water quality must be maintained at the level it had at the time of designation. Even slight decreases in water quality are not permitted — high water quality must be preserved. In practical terms, the designation can make it substantially more difficult to authorize activities that would degrade the existing high water quality of the designated portions of the Upper Verde.

2nd Annual Yavapai County Preparedness Expo Returns to Cliff Castle Casino October 9, 2026

Free community event focuses on preparedness, response resources and local resilience

YAVAPAI COUNTY, Ariz. — The Yavapai County Community Organizations Active in Disaster (YCCOAD) will host the 2nd Annual Yavapai County Preparedness Expo on Friday, October 9, 2026, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Cliff Castle Casino Hotel in Camp Verde, Arizona.
Admission is free.

The 2026 Yavapai County Preparedness Expo is a free community event bringing together emergency responders, community organizations, preparedness partners, and members of the public to connect with resources on disaster readiness that are available before, during, and after an emergency.

Yavapai County regularly experiences hazards, including wildfires and flooding, and preparedness for these events will be among the important themes covered during the event.

The Preparedness Expo is presented by the Yavapai County Community Organizations Active in Disaster (YCCOAD) in conjunction with the Yavapai County Office of Emergency Management and with participation from community preparedness, response, and recovery partners.

ABOUT YCCOAD

YCCOAD is made up of a broad network of organizations and agencies that support disaster preparedness, response, recovery, and community resilience throughout Yavapai County. Its membership includes local disaster relief partners, nonprofit and nongovernmental organizations, volunteer organizations, community health and medical resources, emergency management agencies, local fire service partners, law enforcement partners, animal response and sheltering organizations, communications and radio groups, independent living and access-and-functional-needs advocates, long-term recovery partners, municipal and county agencies, faith-based organizations, and state partners including the Arizona Department of Emergency and Military Affairs.

This event will include a variety of information and opportunities for the public to learn more about their local resources and is strongly encouraged to attend and learn how individuals, families, businesses, and communities can be better prepared before an emergency or disaster occurs.

You hear “FEMA” after a disaster — but federal assistance isn’t always the most likely outcome.

🏗️ Public Assistance (PA) can help communities recover eligible costs for things like debris removal, emergency protective measures, and repairs to public roads, buildings, and infrastructure.

For FEMA Public Assistance to become available, the disaster must be significant enough to support a federal disaster declaration. Many local disasters will not reach that level.

🌵 When federal assistance isn’t available, Arizona may have State Public Assistance available if the event meets state criteria and the required declaration process.

That’s why we plan for recovery at every level — local first, with state and federal resources available when an event qualifies.
