The Spider-Tailed Horned Viper is a newly discovered and recently described snake from the Zagros Mountains in western Iran. It’s range may, however, spread as far as Iraq, Israel, Afghanistan, and Pakistan. This 3-foot long snake undulates its bizarre tail, creating the uncanny illusion of a scampering spider, luring birds to within striking distance. There are even poems written about this unique reptile in the North Arabian Desert areas.
Oddly Enough … A specimen of this animal was brought to the United States as early as the 1960s in a preservation jar. Examined only visually through the glass, it was deduced that the “growth” on the tail was a tumor caused by some kind of parasite, and was dismissed as a singular anomaly and not a new species!
