With a deep sense of loss but with gratitude to God for a long and distinguished life, AMV Publishing Services announces the passing of a much beloved scholar, erudite author and a co-publisher of a book project on our list of publications, Prof. Sharifa Zawawi (March 26, 1934 - August 6, 2019). Prof. Zawawi joined her ancestors while on vacation in her native Zanzibar following a brief illness and was buried according to Moslem rites. She is survived by a loving family including a sister and other close relatives. She was Professor Emeritus of Classical Languages and taught Linguistics, Arabic and Swahili languages and cultures at The City College of the City University of New York (CUNY), Columbia University and the New York University. She worked for several years as a language consultant and examiner for various universities in the US. She authored a long list of books and texts among which are "Kanga: The Cloth that Speaks", "Kiswahili Kwa Kitendo, Say it in Swahili", "Loan words and their Effect on the Classification of Swahili Nominals", "Fast-Track Swahili", "Learn our Kiswahili ", "Converse in Kiswahili: Ongea" "What's in a Name?" Unaitwaje - "A Swahili Book of Names”.

May Prof. Zawawi's beautiful and kind soul Rest in Perfect Peace and may God provide all her loved ones with the fortitude to bear the great loss of her transition to eternity. Amen
