Journalism is a highly competitive industry. To be successful, you need passion, curiosity, strong skills and drive. But how does that translate into a career? We asked several professional journalists for strategies students should use on the job hunt and to build their careers. Here's what they suggest:
Not every journalism student can afford to take an unpaid summer internship or work for free for student media. Many students must work part time while in college to pay the bills. For our fourth career video we asked several journalists for advice about how students with limited resources can make themselves more competitive for internships, jobs and advancement. WATCH NOW:
Are you inquisitive, curious or downright nosy? Do you ask a lot of questions and questions on top of those? We asked several journalists about the essential traits of a journalist. Do you want to know what they said? Glad you asked.
Is there a future in journalism? Is it a rewarding career? Yes and Yes. The Dow Jones News Fund asked several professional journalists about the future of journalism and why they love their jobs, here’s what they had to say:
Families, veterans, children – all are being impacted by the increasing rate of homelessness in Phoenix, Arizona. They’ve encountered difficulties with medications, the sweltering summers, police interactions and more. They’re taking over the DJNF Instagram and Twitter accounts. Go to those platforms today to follow along. And make sure to follow Unsheltered: Phoenix Homeless Project for extra content. Video produced by Charlene Santiago. Video content from Samie Gebers and Eric Schmid.
"They keep my spirits up to go on." Vernon Stout says his dogs are helping him, while he's experiencing homelessness. The number of unsheltered people in Phoenix, Arizona, has gone up by 25 percent in the last year, meaning more and more people are living on the streets. Reporters with the Dow Jones News Fund will release a multimedia project on Saturday about people experiencing homelessness in Phoenix. They’ll be taking over the DJNF Instagram and Twitter accounts for their project debut. Please follow Unsheltered: Phoenix Homeless Project for updates on the story! Video produced by Austin Westfall.
