This is a deckplan for a Barrier Freighter from our Phage setting, designed using the Arkenforge Master's Toolkit and the new Sci-Fi Essentials pack. By the time the Kickstarter launches, we hope to include a full book of maps like these as well as image files that GMs can either print out as full color battle maps or use for their VTT format of choice.

Entry is via airlocks which lead into the lower deck cargo / hangar area and the engine room where the ship's barrier drive is located. Ladders lead up to a main deck where you will find the bridge, most operating and tactical systems, and crew rec areas. More ladders lead to the upper deck which is mostly reserved for crew cabins and cryo pods. This model also features a captain's suite and a small garden for growing emergency food, though most vegetation that can survive in hyperspace is not pleasant to most panhuman palates.

The cryo station is deliberately positioned as far from the airlocks as possible, as these are first targets for boarders. A ship without functioning cryo pods can't effectively flee into hyperspace, as prolonged exposure to its bizarre warping energies afflicts sentients with a condition called the Phage, whose symptoms begin with mild hallucinations and irritability and end with homicidal rage and eventual blindness. Standard travel procedure is three crew in cryo, three out with shifts changing every six hours. The extra pod is reserved for guests, prisoners, or to replace a damaged pod during an emergency.

Phage Space Opera

The spacers of Phage live in a distant future in which advanced technology exists alongside unspeakable alien horrors and callous, dystopian governments. The setting is predominantly space opera, but blends the familiar conventions of that genre with elements of Lovecraftian horror and cyberpunk to create something darker and grittier. The earth humans knew was conquered long ago by a corrupt, warmongering civilization, and humanity's descendants are but one of many subjugated peoples scattered throughout colonized space and treated little better than vermin by the dominant alien culture.

Hyperspace, the strange parallel dimension that makes interstellar travel possible, spawns creatures and hazards that can easily end a crew's lives or drive them to madness. But to those who lost their homeworlds to the expansion of the Collective, the opportunity to fly across the stars in spite of the danger is one to be seized and appreciated — for those with the courage and imagination to exist outside the Collective's shadow, the chance to make a score big enough to buy sustainable independence is a rare diamond worth searching for amid the grit and the rust. The setting takes its name from a terrifying malady that afflicts those exposed to the bizarre warping energies of hyperspace, consuming the mind and the body and driving the victim to homicidal rage and eventual blindness. Fear of this occupational hazard is ubiquitous among those who survive by doing business in the trade lanes.
