Foreign Minister Nyanti Announces Plans for Consulates in Canada, Australia, and Diaspora Database

By Emmanuel Davis

Foreign Affairs Minister, Amb. Sara Beysolow Nyanti, has disclosed government plans to establish consulates in Canada and Australia, while also developing a database to capture information on Liberians abroad.

She said the initiative responds to long-standing calls from diaspora Liberians for greater diplomatic presence and services, but stressed that such moves will require legislative budgetary support.

“It is good that members of the Legislature are here because they make budgetary appropriations, and we will need their support to make this work,” Minister Nyanti stated.

She noted that limited embassies and capacity gaps have hindered services to Liberians overseas, but assured that government is working gradually to address the challenges.

On the database project, Minister Nyanti explained it will help government identify the skills and interests of diaspora Liberians, enabling ministries and agencies to engage them for national development.

“This move is not just about knowing where Liberians are around the globe, but also about rallying them to contribute back home,” she added.

The Minister further emphasized the need for structured diaspora investment, reaffirming the Ministry’s commitment to economic diplomacy and closer engagement with Liberians abroad.

"There is no special treatment given to anyone" Deputy Minister Sando Clearfield.

By: Emmanuel N. Davis

MONROVIA, Liberia Deputy Information Minister Daniel Sando on Thursday addressed growing public concern over why Bryant McGill has not been arrested, while Ministry of Agriculture contractor Sando Kromah has already been jailed on statutory r**e charges.

Speaking at the Ministry of Information’s regular press briefing, Sando quoted police authorities as saying that the two cases are different in scope and evidence.

“Police reiterate there is no special treatment given to anyone,” Sando said. “In one case, evidence was immediately available — the suspect was caught in the room with the victim. In the other case with the Suspended Deputy Minister, it is necessary to conduct all investigations to establish probable cause. There is no preferential treatment. The police have no interest in who the accused is; their only interest is to investigate and establish probable cause.”

The remarks followed mounting criticism that McGill, a prominent political figure, has not been placed in detention while Kromah was swiftly arrested and charged. Sando stressed that the circumstances are not the same and cautioned against drawing premature comparisons.

“Oh, when I follow the news, people say the police arrested this person and left the other. This is why the President suspended the official because people were saying the man is a deputy minister and untouchable,” Sando explained. “But the facts and circumstances in the two cases are not the same.”

Kromah, 34, was charged with statutory r**e after police said he assaulted a 14-year-old girl at his Vai Town apartment on Sept. 24. A medical report confirmed signs of abuse, and he has been remanded to the Monrovia Central Prison pending indictment and trial.

Police have yet to release further details regarding how far the investigation involving McGill.
