Have a recipe to share?

RAID (RISD Asian Intersections + Diaspora) is publishing a zine this spring that includes student submissions of home recipes to share with the RISD community.

Google Forms link way below:

The Diaspora Cookbook is a collection of memories of those who identify with or around the term "diaspora," (to scatter about) or those who have settled far from their ancestral homelands. Passed down through anecdote and experience, these recipes excavate cultural history in a land that highlights difference as otherness. To cook these recipes are to reconnect and relive past generations; to eat them is to share safety. We ask you to donate a story through your recipe, one with personal memories tied to your understanding of home.

Call out anti-blackness within yourself and your communities. Remember that can not expect other POC to stand for Pan-Asian solidarity without recognizing and being accountable for the problematic actions within our own community. To work towards de-centering whiteness we must recognize the privilege and systemic proximity to whiteness that exists within the Pan-Asian community.

Small businesses owned by Korean-Americans are the epicenter of a tense decades-long relationship.

We are so happy to be back and looking forward to all that we have planned for this year. Still reeling in the excitement and support from our launch last Spring, it was great to meet the many faces, fresh and familiar, that stopped by our booth at Block Party last weekend. Lets start this year off…

Hello everyone! Our friends at Brown, Brown Southeast Asian Studies Initiative (SEASI) are organizing some exciting events this coming week starting with a film screening tomorrow night as well as a kick-off event Thursday night -- I've attached some flyers as well as a link to the Event for anyone interested!

Southeast Asia is one of the most underrepresented areas in academia at Brown and RISD. Yet, there is a vibrant community of students striving to make the region, its diasporas and their identities a core part of their research, activities and life on campus. The Southeast Asian Studies Initiative invites you to discover more about this region and its diasporas through the lens of work by Brown and RISD students on Thursday, April 27, 7pm at the Petteruti Lounge, Campus Center. Student and faculty presenters will be sharing their insights in the form of research projects, opinion editorials, photographic installations, theses, and visual art. Dinner will be provided.

Speakers and topics:

Prof. Evelyn Hu-DeHart – “America and Southeast Asia in the 16th Century: Towards a Global History”
Barry Thrasher – “Post-Post-Colonial Indonesian Development”
Hisyam Takiudin – “Miracle of ASEAN”
Gabriella Gil – a photo series
Pia Ceres – “Family Horror Story," “Diaspora and Language”
Nancy Truong – “Vietnamese-American Nail Salon Workers in the Bay Area”
Fiona Graham – “Casting Shadows: Indonesian Wayang Kulit Performance as a Process of Impression”
