We inherited the holidays. Nobody handed over the instructions.
My Grandy knew how much turkey to buy for twenty-two people. She knew exactly what time the bird went in so everything landed hot at the same moment. She never wrote a word of it down, because why would she. She just knew.
She also never sat down. Not once, not for a whole meal. My aunts, same. My mom, same. Thirty years of holidays and my clearest memory of all of them is the back of somebody’s head at the sink.
Now it’s us. The generation that grew up watching this, suddenly holding the turkey. We’ve got the group chat, the shared spreadsheet, somebody’s toddler on our hip, and a Pinterest board we are absolutely not going to live up to.
And the table got bigger. Twenty-something people. Half of them have strong opinions about the stuffing. One person is bringing a dish nobody asked for and it is always, always another dessert. And there is still exactly one oven.
We want all of it — the full house, the food people talk about for a year. We just don’t want to spend the entire day with our backs to the room.
So we built the thing we kept wishing somebody had handed us. You put in how many people are coming, and it tells you how much to cook, when to start, which dishes are about to fight over the oven, and what you can make Sunday, Monday and Tuesday so Thursday is mostly reheating.
