Vagabond Magazine

Vagabond Magazine Vagabond Magazine is a new publication aiming to provide a platform for travel narrative and cultural discourse. Visit us: http://vagabondmagazine.org

The magazine is divided into five sections: Travel, Arts and Culture, Cuisine, Features and Events. It includes personal narratives, student travel guides, and photo essays, as well as articles featuring food culture and cuisine, the arts, music, cultural events, and interesting traditions or rituals. The idea to start Vagabond came from a passion for culture and travel that had no real outlet yet

. Our goal is two-pronged: First, we aim to be a resource for students to turn to when they need guidance about how to navigate certain places, programs, and global events and attractions. We hope to fulfill this goal by having student travel guides and city portraits, “How-to” style articles, and columnists that are abroad and report back to us an account of their experiences. Second, we aim to be a space for students to share their travel and cultural experiences with the community through personal narratives and features. We envision Vagabond to be more than just an anonymous publication: we want all Brown students to be engaged with or by Vagabond, in some form or another.

"I never thought I would be singing Andy Grammer’s love song, 'Fresh Eyes,' about a building."

Why would Vagabond writer Elizabeth Yeh, '19 be singing a love song about the Sciences Library? Check out this piece about Brown's favorite Brutalist structure, the SciLi, at the link below:

“I got these fresh eyes, never seen you before like this / My God, you’re beautiful.” I never thought I would be singing Andy Grammer’s love song, “Fresh Eyes,” about a building. And not just any building. The infamous Science Library (shown above), or SciLi, as students at Brown Univers...

"Maybe that’s what life is—jumping from home to home, finding these little pieces of homes on our walks and train rides and coffee runs..."

Vagabond brings you a new piece by Purvi Goel, '19 titled "Finding a Little Piece of Home on Amtrak." It is a reflection on the meaning of home, and will resonate with anyone whose circumstances have taken them far from the place in which they grew up. Read at the link below:

The Amtrak smells of coffee both fresh and stale – Have you noticed that? Hazy footprints of visitors long-since past, mixing with fresh ones from passengers just now boarding. I like it; it’s like a mini Starbucks on each train car. Beats the rotten, old-air smell of the public transportation.....

"...watching tea spill on my laptop was watching myself fail at being an adult."

Vagabond brings you a new think-piece about a laptop and a cup of tea. These objects alone are not particularly remarkable, yet Vagabond writer Nhu Phung '21 conveys powerful ideas about consumerism, independence, and material significance by reflecting on the fateful encounter between these two things. The blend of humor and social commentary make for a piece that's not to be missed. Read the story at the link below!

I spilled tea on my laptop. I spilled hot tea on my precious, under-$200 laptop because I was too cheap to buy anything else, and I knew that I would break everything anyway. I had expensive glasses. I sat on them. Too many times. And I would just go around...

Around the world, people celebrate the coming of the New Year in similar ways, typically with a spectacular display of fireworks, street parties, music and dancing, and lots of fabulous food and drinks. Yet each destination has its own unique twist as well as a distinctive setting.

Why should a banker play jazz?

"For it is in this free space that they paint a picture of who they are as people. In other words, it is when we are most free that we are most ourselves." - Elizabeth Yeh

Enjoy a wonderfully written piece by Vagabond writer Elizabeth Yeh as she reflects on how jobs and hobbies shape our identities.

READ THIS PIECE AND MORE WITH THE LINK BELOW:

“Ah, it must be Elizabeth! Send her up.” Well, I thought, at least he still sounds the same. “The elevator is right down that hall and to the left, miss,” said the kind face behind the counter. I repeated the floor and room number over again in my head. As...

All we are remembered by; the excess of a mind at work.
coffee stains on old desks

The energy we use to keep us going through our years here, the dedication that creates the future of the world."

Make sure to take a study break to appreciate the collection of poetry among the desks! Happy studying!

John D. Rockefeller, Jr. Library–colloquially known as the Rock, or even more colloquially–seen as an amalgamation of discarded poetry written into ancient desks. The largest and most intricate, living, breathing piece of literature on campus. I walk in and immediately make my way to the bottom ...

"In a world so often driven by the fear of change, a fear shared by millions and millions of people, another paradoxical fear seems to counter it, stirring the pot of social norms and generations of animosity. The fear of change is undoubtedly paralleled by the fear of permanency; the fear of tattoos."

Hope everyone had a wonderful thanksgiving!
