Our Story
Bohème Publishing is a small independent book publishing company dedicated to producing distinctive works that are unexpected and important, as deemed by our small unsuspecting team. Bohème Publishing is about autonomy: political, cultural, social. Freedom of expression. Freedom to breakout. The freedom of youth!
Our mission is to create a new publishing company, at a time when this could be considered counter-intuitive as a business model. A new kind of publisher, however, that is fresh and hip, and that considers illustration to be equally important to the words. A publisher embracing the latest trend of a do-good business model, incorporating the charitable profits within the main framework of our business. That is also firmly rooted in a traditional, perhaps even old-fashioned respect for literature and its history. Not stodgy, just respectful.
Within that framework, our goal is to seek projects that add something new to the world, that are dedicated to good writing and good design—to quality, always. Fiction, all lengths, even new lengths; history—history of culture, of wartime, of movements, and of places people don't understand, past, present, and future; and journalism.
And that, yes, plays upon the themes of "bohemianism". Experiencing, pondering, reacting, learning and most importantly, sharing… The bohemian has existed over an expanse of shifting eras and in many places. Today, the bohemian is the traveler, the vagabond, and the recorder. Daringly, the one who ventures off freely—with no boundaries set by others—to explore and interact with the world as one pleases. Bearing a moral duty of mutual respect, the modern bohemian is a loyal human.
The incorporation of illustration within the books turns these books into a special item, encouraging even more hands on interaction, giving more cause to flip back and forth between the pages. They are like collectors items, special to the end. Since the beginning of books, illustration has played a distinctive role, and yet over the past few decades that has been lost. We are bringing it back. Each of our books will have illustrations on each of our covers and inside our interior designs. We are strong supporters of collaboration, so outside artists will be invited to participate in future book projects. Meaning, in addition to our main illustrator, we plan to hand-pick authors and artists that we believe compatible to create extraordinary storytelling and compositions.
Lastly, reiterating our emphasis on sharing, we are dedicated to being a publishing company that is unique in our profitable and charitable structure. Each book project that we do will have its own custom charitable cause to which five percent of the profits of each book sale will go.
