James Patterson Book Co-Authored With Vicky Ward About Kohberger Murder Case Released Monday

July 11, 2025 Evan Ellis News

A high profile book about the Bryan Kohberger murder case will be released on Monday.

The former Washington State University student pleaded guilty last week in the stabbing deaths of four University of Idaho students at a Moscow rental home just off campus. Kohberger killed Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, X**a Kernodle and Ethan Chapin in November of 2022. The plea agreement calls for Kohberger to receive four consecutive life sentences when he is sentenced later this month.

Bestselling author James Patterson and investigative journalist Vicky Ward have co-authored the book called “The Idaho Four An American Tragedy.” The work is based on hundreds of interviews that Ward conducted. She spoke to the victims’ families and local officials to describe the case and the people involved. The book takes a deep dive into the case and delves into the impact the slayings had on the victims’ families and friends and the Moscow/Pullman community.

The book includes accounts from longtime News Director at Pullman Radio Evan Ellis who was interviewed by Ward several times about the case. Ward will discuss the book with Ellis during the Monday Morning News on AM 1150 KQQQ. You can also listen to the interview live here http://64.131.95.13:7801/stream

Pullman’s Serial Tire Slasher Receives Maximum Jail Sentence

July 11, 2025 Evan Ellis News

Pullman’s serial tire slasher has received the maximum jail sentence for causing thousands of dollars in damage on College Hill.

45 year old Benjamin Rinehart was convicted of felony vandalism by a Whitman County Superior Court Jury during his trial last month. Rinehart was arrested by Pullman Police in January after he was caught on surveillance camera slashing the tires on a vehicle parked on Spaulding Street. It was the second time in a week that Rinehart slashed the tires on that same vehicle. The woman who owns that car set up a camera to watch it after she was victimized and bought new tires.

The conviction involved four victims who had their tires slashed by Rinehart. Pullman Police suspected that he slashed the tires on dozens of vehicles in the Spaulding Street area last winter.

Officers and prosecutors could never determine why Rinehart slashed the tires. During sentencing on Friday Judge Roger Sandberg asked Rinehart why he did it and he chose to not answer. Judge Sandberg handed down the maximum sentence in this case, three months in jail and called the vandalism spree "senseless." You can listen to some of that ruling from the judge at the link below.

Judge Sandberg ordered that Rinehart pay nearly 2,500 dollars in restitution to the victims. He was placed on probation for a year and ordered to undergo a mental health evaluation and comply with any treatment recommendations. Judge Sandberg also ruled that Rinehart cannot convert any portion of his jail sentence to community service and placed him in custody at the end of Friday’s hearing. Rinehart’s victims were neighbors living in his apartment complex.
