Good history lesson and even-handed commentary from WSU archivist Mark O'English about flooding in Pullman.

With the flooding that took place in Pullman a little over a month ago, we wanted to take a look back at some of the previous flooding in Pullman. While NOAA defines the flood stage for the Palouse River at Pullman at 7 feet, it looks like 8 feet is the level at which more than minimal water is spil...

GOOD NEWS!!!

Some incredibly generous members of our community have stepped up to fund Pullman’s Barracuda Swim Team. This youth program was one of many impacted by recent city budget cuts, so it’s genuinely encouraging to see neighbors rally together to bring it back.

It’s also a great reminder of how local communities really work: whether funding comes from tax dollars or private donations, it’s still LOCAL resources supporting LOCAL priorities. And when something matters enough, our town has the capacity to make it happen.

In many cases, we don’t have to wait on city government to act. Volunteers, civic groups, churches, clubs, and individuals all have the power to make a real difference in Pullman’s quality of life.

Instead of focusing only on what the city can or can’t do, this is a chance for us—as citizens—to step up and invest in the things we care about most.

That’s how strong communities are built.

The Pullman community has stepped up to save the Barracuda Swim Team program offered by the City of Pullman. City parks and recreation announced early last month that the kids swim program for this…

“Melanie Hodges is a huge part of the culture of downtown Pullman. She's a treasure and one of the small business owners that we are lucky to have who breathes life with some character into that little corridor. It's important to ensure that we continue to see her creativity shine through those clever ever changing window displays, help with brides on their big days, and our girl's getting ready to go to prom.”

The water came up FAST.

It was more or less normal overnight, then gradually climbed up into the "take action" zone by 6pm.

But here is where things get WILD. The river DOUBLEd in flow between 6:30pm and when the bridge finally dislodged at 12:15. That's a massive jump in just a few hours, and is a classic "flash flood" scenario.

As of 1:15 AM, the river is at 3,270 cubic feet per second and RISING. Basements in downtown are likely already flooded, and it is possible we will see water approaching first-floor storefronts if the river goes above 8 ft.

Stay safe out there!

Well, I couldn't have been more wrong about this one. Pretty, pretty, pretty, pretty wrong.

We've all made a typo at some point, right? 😂

It doesn't help that we have two arterials in town with a single-digit difference in their names (SR 270 vs SR 27). 🤔🤨
