🐢 Let’s hear it for Florida’s only native species of tortoise! 🐢

These MVPs use their big claws and shovel-shaped front feet to dig a deep, extensive burrow that reaches around 6.5 ft. below ground, and stretches 15 ft. long. Over 350 different species of wildlife and insects have been documented utilizing gopher tortoise burrows for shelter, nesting, hunting, and escape from extreme weather conditions.

This , here’s a few ways you can be more gopher tortoise aware, and help to protect this critical species:

- Gopher tortoises are land-dwelling and are not well adapted to swimming- never put a tortoise in the water…even if you see one taking a stroll along the beach!
-Gopher tortoises are legally protected in Florida- it is illegal to handle, harass, kill, or have a gopher tortoise. Be sure to observe these awesome animals from a distance, and refrain from feeding them.
-Gopher tortoises lay their eggs in the sand around their burrow- avoid stepping on top of or close to burrows to prevent them from collapsing, and to avoid accidentally stepping on eggs.
-In gopher tortoise areas, keep dogs on-leash and away from tortoises and their burrows.
-Never release pet tortoises into the environment. They can spread diseases and can compete with gopher tortoises for habitat.

Village Brewhouse at Fisherman’s Village is one of our recent favorite spots for dinner.
It has an amazing view of the sunset over the water, nice service, great food and prices.
Tonight we ordered
🍴blackened mahi bites 9/10
🍴wedge salad 6/10
🍴 taco salad 10/10
Only thing I would suggest is the wedge salad being wedges of iceberg instead of hearts of romaine. The mahi were flavorful and the taco salad was huge!
