After years of uncertainty, movie theaters just delivered their strongest May since before the pandemic. The domestic box office topped $1 billion for the month — the first time since 2019 and only the ninth May ever to hit that mark.

AMC also reported its best May attendance since 2019, welcoming 25.5 million moviegoers worldwide. Even more impressive? This wasn’t driven by a Marvel blockbuster. Instead, a diverse mix of films—from biopics and sequels to original horror hits—helped fuel the comeback.

With analysts forecasting a $4.1B–$4.3B summer box office, 2026 could be the strongest theatrical summer in seven years. The big-screen experience is proving it still has plenty of life left.

One of the biggest shakeups in TV news is underway. CBS has named Nick Bilton as the new executive producer of ‘60 Minutes,’ making him only the fifth person to lead the iconic newsmagazine in its 58-year history.

The former New York Times tech columnist, documentary filmmaker, and Hollywood producer arrives without traditional TV news experience—a first for the franchise. Supporters see it as a bold move to modernize a legacy brand for younger audiences, while critics view the broader leadership overhaul as a politically charged reset.

Bilton says his goal is to expand ‘60 Minutes’ beyond its Sunday broadcast, reaching viewers across multiple platforms and experimenting with new storytelling approaches. The big question: can an outsider reinvent America’s most-watched news program without disrupting what already works?

Season 59 returns this fall.

Hollywood may have a new playbook. This weekend, two low-budget horror films from YouTube-born directors claimed the top two spots at the box office, pushing a $165M Star Wars blockbuster into third place.

The success of Backrooms, Obsession, and Markiplier’s Iron Lung has sparked comparisons to the 1970s filmmaking revolution, when young directors challenged the studio system with bold, original ideas. Now, a new generation of creators is doing it with audiences built online.

Backrooms delivered A24’s biggest opening ever, outperforming major franchise titles and drawing a massive Gen Z crowd, with 86% of ticket buyers under 35. The message is getting harder to ignore: original stories, fresh voices, and creator-driven filmmaking are becoming a major force at the box office.

Amazon MGM Studios has taken Hollywood’s most public step into AI-powered content creation yet. At its “AI on the Lot” event, the studio unveiled the GenAI Creators’ Fund, a new initiative that gives filmmakers, creators, and startups funding plus access to Amazon’s AI tools to develop movies and TV shows.

The company also announced three AI-assisted animated series headed to Prime Video and introduced Project Nara, an AI production platform designed to work alongside industry-standard tools like Maya, Blender, and Unreal Engine.

Amazon says the technology is meant to support creators rather than replace them, but the move signals a major shift as AI becomes increasingly integrated into Hollywood’s development pipeline. With Netflix and other studios reportedly building their own AI initiatives, the race to define the future of AI-powered entertainment is officially underway.

After years of uncertainty and uneven recovery, theaters may finally be heading back to pre-pandemic heights. Analysts are projecting a massive $4.1B–4.3B domestic summer box office haul, making Summer 2026 potentially the strongest theatrical season since 2019.

The boost comes from an unusually stacked lineup of event films, including Steven Spielberg’s ‘Disclosure Day,’ Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey,’ new installments of ‘Toy Story’ and ‘Spider-Man,’ and ‘The Mandalorian and Grogu,’ which officially kicked off the summer movie season this weekend.

The last time Hollywood saw numbers this strong was in 2019, before the pandemic reshaped the industry. Since then, only the “Barbenheimer” phenomenon managed to generate similar levels of excitement. While overall attendance is still below past highs, premium ticket prices and major blockbuster events are helping drive revenue back up. For the first time in years, there’s real optimism surrounding the future of theaters.

Cannes Film Festival closed with a huge night for Cristian Mungiu, whose drama Fjord won the Palme d’Or and made him just the tenth director ever to claim Cannes’ top prize twice. Starring Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve, the film also extended Neon’s incredible streak to seven straight Palme d’Or wins dating back to Parasite in 2019.

Andrey Zvyagintsev’s anti-Putin neo-noir Minotaur earned the Grand Prix, while multiple categories ended in rare ties — including Best Director, Best Actor, and Best Actress. Pawel Pawlikowski also delivered one of the night’s standout speeches, calling for art to resist “noise, algorithms, and peer pressure.”

Offscreen, the acquisitions market was just as intense. Netflix landed La Bola Negra and Gentle Monster as potential Oscar contenders, while MUBI picked up Coward for North America. Meanwhile, The Midnight Library starring Florence Pugh sparked a major bidding war and is expected to become Cannes’ biggest deal of the year.

From historic wins to massive studio deals, Cannes 2026 proved once again why it remains the center of the film world every May.

Netflix is making another major theatrical play. David Fincher’s The Adventures of Cliff Booth — starring Brad Pitt reprising his Oscar-winning role from Once Upon a Time in Hollywood — is heading to IMAX exclusively on November 25 before streaming on December 23.

What once looked like awards-season strategy is starting to feel like a real business shift. With subscriber growth slowing and studios cutting theatrical output, Netflix appears ready to turn cinemas into a serious revenue stream. AMC partnering on the release also signals how much the industry landscape is changing.

If these theatrical bets keep working, Netflix may no longer just be a streaming company — it could become a major box office player too.

After 7 years away from cinemas, ‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’ is finally bringing Star Wars back to the big screen — but the stakes are bigger than one movie. Disney now faces a major question: did years of Disney+ shows turn Star Wars into a TV franchise instead of a theatrical event?

With a smaller budget, softer box office expectations, and mixed reviews, Lucasfilm is no longer chasing $2B highs. Instead, they’re hoping strong word of mouth can reignite excitement for the galaxy far, far away. The bigger test may come in 2027 with Shawn Levy and Ryan Gosling’s standalone ‘Star Wars: Starfighter.’

James Cameron says the future of the ‘Avatar’ franchise depends on making the movies faster and less expensive to produce. The director revealed he’s exploring new technologies that could cut production time in half and reduce costs by a third — fueling speculation that AI may play a bigger role behind the scenes.

While Cameron insists no AI was used in ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash,’ he previously used AI tools for 3D conversion and image enhancement on Billie Eilish’s concert film. With the franchise’s box office trend slowing and Disney yet to officially greenlight ‘Avatar 4,’ the pressure is on to reinvent the pipeline before the next chapter arrives.

Hollywood may have moved on to endless franchises and superhero universes, but Netflix sees a different opportunity: bringing back the big-budget, adult-oriented action films that once dominated theaters in the late ’90s and early 2000s.

The strategy is already paying off. In just five months, Netflix released four R-rated originals — The Rip, War Machine, Thrash, and Apex — and all became global streaming hits. War Machine alone pulled 128.4M views in its first eight weeks, while the films collectively dominated Netflix’s global #1 spot for nearly half the year.

More importantly, viewers aren’t just watching one and moving on. Netflix is building genuine audience loyalty for the genre studios largely abandoned. And with projects like a Tarantino/Fincher collaboration and Ben Affleck’s Animals still on the way, the streamer is doubling down on the return of the adult blockbuster.
