The Quincy Doggy Paddlers split a doubleheader with the Clinton LumberKings on Tuesday, winning the opener 5-3 and falling 12-2 in six innings in the nightcap.

The Doggy Paddlers took the lead for good in the top of the sixth of a 5-3 victory in the opener, while the LumberKings scored four runs in three separate innings — the first, fourth and sixth — to end a 12-2 win in the sixth inning of the second game at NelsonCorp Field.

Muddy River Sports Editor Matt Schuckman spent time Tuesday with the WIU football team during its first practice of training camp, and he put together this photo gallery.

The Leathernecks hit the field Tuesday morning for the first practice of the 2025 training camp, engaging in a spirited and lively workout on the grass field behind Brophy Hall. WIU was off the field before the high heat of the afternoon, paving the way for film review and meetings.

Muddy River Sports Editor Matt Schuckman writes how Ryne Sandberg showed respect for the game, and in turn, all baseball fans — even Cardinals fans — respected him for it.

And how he handled himself in the midst of a chaotic moment and a chaotic crowd should be emulated. No bat flip. No staring down the pitcher. No slow trot around the bases. He ran the bases the same way he did on the other 281 home runs of his career.
