"They must turn from evil and do good; they must seek peace and pursue it." 1 Peter 3:11

When I think of peace, I often think of it as a situation that I’m in. I think, “Well, this is a lot of chaos, and I’m anxious about all of it!” or, “Everything is working out so well, and I have so much peace about the situation.” But, is peace that’s dependent on my circumstances really peace?

I love how Peter tells the recipients of his letter to seek peace and pursue it, but how in the world are we supposed to do that?

In order to find peace, we have to know the true source of it. This world and our circumstances will never provide peace because they’re always changing. Thank the Lord that He never changes! Even if it feels like the world is crashing down around us, God is what we hold on to for peace and steadiness because that is who He is.

Then, when we find peace, we have to pursue it. Pursuing is active; it means that we are actively chasing peace in order to catch it. We can't just wait for peace to come, we have to find it.

So, when Peter says to seek peace and pursue it, I think that also means to seek the Lord. Read the Word. Fellowship with other believers. Aim to be more like our Heavenly Father: the true source and example of peace.

"May the God of endurance and encouragement grant you to live in such harmony with one another, in accord with Christ Jesus, that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ." Romans 15:5-6

We are focusing on peace with our Power Verses, and today’s verse really focuses on peace with other people. More specifically though, it focuses on peace amongst believers.

Whenever you have lots of individuals put together, there is bound to be conflict and a difference in opinion. (I mean, duh, right?) So, what do we do? Peace seems almost impossible in these situations, doesn’t it?

“May the God of endurance and encouragement grant you to live in such harmony with one another, in accord with Christ Jesus, that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

As much as we would like to, we can’t just decide one day “There’s going to be peace here.” True peace with our fellow believers will only come from the Lord. And the awesome thing is that when He does that, He gets glory out of it!

So, whenever there are issues–which we know are going to come eventually–let’s remember that Satan is our true enemy, not each other. Seek the Lord’s help to have peace with your fellow believers today and trust that He will use that to bring non-believers to Himself.

"Finally, brothers and sisters, rejoice! Strive for full restoration, encourage one another, be of one mind, live in peace. And the God of love and peace will be with you." 2 Corinthians 13:11

I don’t know about you, but I’m loving the new songs in The Mix. I’m also loving the opportunity to memorize lyrics.

Songs have themes or specific messages they are attempting to communicate. It’s almost like my heart chants, internally, as a song becomes more familiar to me. I am a musician. Therefore, music speaks to me, and I feel as though it expresses my thoughts and feelings more than anything else. 2 Corinthians 13:11 reads in my mind like a chant. It’s own individual tune:
Strive for full restoration (dum-dum)
Encourage one another (Bah-bum)
Be of one mind (Ah-hmm)
Live in peace (Dah-dum-dum)
And…(beat) the God of love and peace will be with you.

The Word is alive and breathing in our lives. We can feel and understand clearly if we follow the beginning points of the verse, then…the God of love and peace will be with us. God does not make promises lightly, He follows through more so than any mortal creature we can know.

Today, how can you: strive for full restoration, encourage one another, be of one mind, and live in peace with fellow believers?

"Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid." John 14:27

Our focus on ‘Peace’ begins today. We all could use more peace in our lives, especially with the school year beginning so soon.
PEACE. The internet’s definitions of peace- freedom from disturbance; tranquility.

The word ‘tranquil’ prompts me to conjure up an image of a spa. Fancy oils paired with fantastic smells, expensive lotions, and service that makes me feel as though I’m a princess for a day. This is an ‘earthly’ view of peace. Jesus’s definition is far more rewarding and precious. In John 14:27, he states he is GIVING peace to us. What an amazing gift. He follows up by reminding us that He does not give to us as the world gives. AKA, I think again of the spa and how inferior that compares to the peace Jesus is trying to give me. My flesh can’t grasp the depth of the peace Jesus is offering. In addition, I let myself feel anxious or afraid of constant curve balls thrown my way. Consumed with the world rather than lifting my eyes to Jesus.

Is this you, as well? Do you find yourself wrapped up in those menial issues that plague your soul with fear and worry? You’re robbed of the peace Jesus so generously gave to you! Read John 14:27, once more. Rest in His peace today. Do not be troubled. Do not be afraid. You have been blessed with peace.

"A hot-tempered person stirs up conflict, but one slow to anger calms strife." Proverbs 15:18

We are wrapping up our focus on gentleness today, and I feel like this is a great verse to end it on because it’s something that EVERYONE has dealt with at some point. Do you know those moments when you’re with another person and the feeling of an argument or a disagreement is imminent? It’s almost like a fight is lurking around a corner and you can’t do anything other than wait for it to show up.

I really like this verse in the NLT when it says, “A hot-tempered person starts fights; a cool-tempered person stops them.”

Conflict and fights are NEVER fun. They cause division and awkwardness, and I don’t think that anyone would say that they enjoy those things. So, how do we avoid them? Well, we have to be slow to anger. When we are “cool-tempered” as this verse says, it’s almost like we’re throwing water on a lit fuse. It extinguishes it.

When we have one of these situations where tensions are high– whether it’s our tension or someone else’s– that is when we have to ask for the Lord to help us be the cool-tempered person. We can’t do it on our own; it has to be through God’s power at work in us.

So, if you come across a situation today that can go either of the ways that Proverbs 15:18 talks about, rest in Christ. Ask Him to give you His gentleness and seek to be slow to anger. Trust that He will enable you to keep your cool.

"But even if you should suffer for righteousness' sake, you will be blessed. Have no fear of them, nor be troubled, but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect." 1 Peter 3:14-15

I’m a big fan of superhero movies. It doesn’t matter how cheesy they may be, I just love them! What’s one sequence that we see in every superhero movie? The training montage. The hero of the film doesn’t know how to fight or there’s some power that they haven’t mastered yet, so we watch 10-20 scenes of them training and learning the skills they need for whatever battle they have to face in the last 20 minutes of the movie. Then, they usually end up defeating the villain with this new found skill, the credits roll, you know the drill…

“But even if you should suffer for righteousness' sake, you will be blessed. Have no fear of them, nor be troubled, but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you…”

A big theme of today’s verse is remembering the Lord’s holiness and being prepared to defend the “hope in [us].” This requires us to have a relationship with God and to know Him and His Word. Now, that does not mean that we only read the Bible in order to have a defense like our favorite superhero does in a movie. We are reading and studying Scripture to know Christ! If we have a strong relationship with Him, and we are studying to know Him, then we will naturally have that defense if we face those that oppose our faith.

But then, the hardest part of this whole thing: “...yet do it with gentleness and respect.”

Hold up… Our faith, the TRUE faith, is being attacked, and we have to be gentle and respectful?! Yep, that’s exactly what it says. When Paul wrote to Timothy about false teachers, he encouraged him to instruct them gently “in the hope that God will grant them repentance leading them to a knowledge of the truth.” (2 Timothy 2:24-26)

When we are interacting with those that are against the gospel, we are told to be gentle and respectful because defending our faith is supposed to be an opportunity to share it with the person opposing it. When we are showing the truth of the gospel, that means that we are sharing the gospel. If we defend our faith with anger and hatred in our hearts, that can push people away from it. And, the Lord promises in these verses that if we suffer well for the sake of righteousness, we will be blessed! This might not be an earthly blessing, but an eternal one waiting for us after this finite life. That doesn’t make the suffering any less difficult, but it does make us remember that the hope we have in our Heavenly Father is so much greater than any suffering we might endure.

So, yes, defend your faith today if the need arises, but remember that the Savior we follow stood on the truth with love, respect, and gentleness. We are called to do the same.
