The new year of 2026 is upon us, and with that, some possible thoughts on how we want it to be. My first Sunday School lesson of the year really “hit the nail on the head” as it focused on “When Your Finances Fall Short” with a key on what role finances play in our lives.

Last week we introduced the thought of true believers struggling with crippling emotions and we focused on depression. We want to continue to talk about this more than common trial faced by many people we know and love and respect as fellow followers of Christ. Our question today is, “What if I am the one dealing with depression?” What if I am the one dealing with depression? In First Kings 19, we find Elijah, the powerful prophet of God – praying that he might die: "I have had enough – take my life…" His words have all the markings of a man struggling with crippling depression and from his experience, we can note a few things that are possible contributors to what I am feeling.

Today, January 9, is National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day.

Each and everyday we have wonderful law enforcement officers who put on their badge and proudly serve the citizens of Quitman and Clarke County. They are the ones you call on when you are in danger, have had an accident, report a crime, or even request a wellness check on a friend or loved one. They see people a lot of times at their worst but still manage to be strong and helpful.

Today is a day set aside to reach out to the law enforcement for a positive reason: that is to say THANK YOU! Thank you for being there when there has been an accident, checking on the small calls that seem big to the citizens, protecting this city and county, being there to help no matter the weather conditions, and for all the other things you do that we don’t see. Thank you for putting on that badge and protecting us with your lives.

Two Arrested Following Warrant Service and Drug Investigation in Clarke County

STONEWALL, Miss. — Two individuals were arrested Wednesday following the service of active warrants and a narcotics investigation at a residence in Clarke County.

On Wednesday, authorities went to a residence located on the 200 block of Moore Road in Stonewall to locate and arrest Gregory Moore, who had active warrants. The operation involved Clarke County Narcotics, with assistance from the Mississippi Department of Corrections, Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics, Clarke County Sheriff’s Department patrol deputies, and the Stonewall Police Department.

Upon law enforcement’s arrival on scene, Moore fled on foot. After a brief foot pursuit, Moore was apprehended and taken into custody.

Clarke County Narcotics charged Moore with the following offenses:
• Trafficking methamphetamine within 1,500 feet of a church
• Felon in possession of a firearm (two counts)
• Possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute while in possession of a firearm within 1,500 feet of a church (two counts)

Authorities say another individual, Timothy Mixon, was also on scene and was taken into custody. Clarke County Narcotics charged Mixon with:
• Possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute within 1,500 feet of a church (two counts)

Officials say the arrests stem from an ongoing investigation into illegal drug activity in the area.

Neither are eligible for bond due to previous bond arrangements and parole violations

All individuals charged are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

- Sheriff Anthony C. Chancelor
