Here’s Queen of Crows by S.L. Wilton:

In a world of strange magic, dangerous creatures, and villainous wyverns, an ousted young queen struggles to regain her throne.

Sophia Pendergast's quest is complicated by deep-rooted misogyny embedded in her culture and religion. Her lover, a dashing young knight, offers her a life in obscure comfort, but she refuses to abandon her people to the usurper's whims. To retake her throne and set prophecy on its path, she must embrace a long-denied secret and discover a prophecy's hidden meaning.

In S. L. Wilton's Queen of Crows, we discover simple truths may not exactly be simple.

We Welcome Our Newest Supportive Friend Organization

RACINE, Wis.— The Chippewa Valley Writers Guild has agreed to join four other writing organizations as a Supportive Friend of the Novel Bookcamp instructional programs. CVWG Founder and Executive Director B.J. Hollars and Dave Rank, Novel Bookcamp executive director, made that announcement in a joint statement today.

The cooperative marketing agreement begins immediately and offers CVWG members reduced prices when enrolling in certain Novel Bookcamp programs. Based in Eau Claire, Wis., the CVWG joins the Chicago Writers Association, HERStry Writing Community, Milwaukee, Wis., the Off Campus Writersʼ Workshop, Winnetka, Ill., and the Wisconsin Writers Association in the Supportive cooperative program.

“The Supportive Friend, agreement states the Novel Bookcamp and the CVWG will promote each other’s services to their members,ˮ Rank said. “In addition, CVWG members can enroll in the Novel Bookcamp’s Workshops and Writing Retreats with discounts of $90 and $45, respectively.ˮ

“The CVWG has always supported and encouraged services for writers in Wisconsin,ˮ Hollars said. “The Novel Bookcamp provides excellent writing programs. Cooperating with the Bookcamp will help spread the word of our programs while our members can enjoy reduced prices at the Bookcamp.ˮ

A Bookcamp fee includes program, six nights private accommodations, and all meals during the week, Rank said. Each year writers from Wisconsin, Illinois, multiple other states, and Canada enroll in the Bookcamp. Registration is now open.

Now in its 12th year, the Novel Bookcamp is a week-long, residential instructional event offering three concurrent writing programs, the instructional Bookcamp Workshop, a Writing Retreat focused on personal writing time, and one-on-one Book Coach sessions. All three programs are offered in two tracks, All-Genre for reality-based fiction and creative nonfiction writers, and Speculative Fiction for writers of Science Fiction, Fantasy, Horror, and related genres, Rank explained.

This year’s Novel Bookcamp will be held June 22-28 at the Siena Retreat Center in northern Racine County. “We usually have between 30 and 40 writers attend,ˮ Rank said, “working in small groups.ˮ

The CVWG is committed to supporting writers throughout northern Wisconsin. Since 2016, the Guild has helped hundreds of writers publish their work and provides a nurturing environment for writers to thrive.

The Novel Bookcamp is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization registered in Wisconsin. Since 2014 it provides well-received, quality educational programs for writers wanting to advance their craft and book-length works-in-progress.

“We thank the CVWG for joining our Supportive Friends,ˮ Rank said. “Such cooperative agreements with other writing organizations, we find, is the best way to market our services.ˮ

The Chippewa Valley Writers Guild (CVWG) is a program of the Eau Claire Regional Arts Council that seeks to support regional writers.

Congratulations to the place winners of the Chicago Writers Association's 9th Annual First Chapter Contest!

First Place goes to Lana Orndorff, a writing specialist at National Louis University, for her gripping first chapter of "Those Who Favor Fire." Lorna has been awarded a full scholarship to attend the All-Genre Novel Bookcamp Workshop, June 22-28, 2025, at the Siena Retreat Center in Racine, Wisconsin, a $1,740 value.

Told from multiple points of view, Lana's opening chapter sets the stage for a timely, poignant, and chilling portrayal of an all-too-common national tragedy—a school shooting. But this one is different: it takes place during a 50th high school reunion, and one of the attendees is a U.S. senator. Lana categorizes her book as Literary Fiction.

Earning second place was Dorothy Nesbit; third place went to Jill Robinson, and the honorable mention recipient was Mary Reed.

Lana has taught writing classes and English as a Second Language in Chile, South Korea, and the United States. After earning her M.A. in English from Northwestern State University of Louisiana, she self-published two novels.

As a reader and writer, Lana says she prefers beautifully tragic stories that fracture her heart. Because of this, her husband rarely takes her book recommendations.

We welcome Lana to the 2025 Novel Bookcamp. Registration is open for all three program options, the intensive Workshop, a Writing Retreat, and one-on-one with a Book Coach. The three programs are offered in two concurrent tracks, the All-Genre and Speculative Fiction.
