Nick Ritrovato - Formerly Wybf-Fm Nick Ritrovato, formerly (now defunct) WYBF (89.1FM) Radnor PA. On air WYBF November 1996 - May 2024. Morning show host June 2001 - May 2024. July 4th.

New Music Discovery starts here. New artists, new music by classic artists, indie rock, local music, theme sets, concert blocks, birthday/anniversary salutes, and much more. The ALERNATIVE to the Alternative. Cabrini University, sadly, has sold WYBF's FCC license and we no longer transmit at 89.1-FM. I apologize for the loss of your FM rock station. It is a miscarriage of justice. Our former compe

titors down the dial, WXPN, WMMR, WXTU, and so on have been streaming on the internet for just as long as we have, give or take, but I don't see those stations taking down their FM signals anytime soon. I was on the air for the last FM transmission 8/24/22, a date, to borrow a phrase from FDR, which lives "in infamy." 11:38AM to be exact was when the transmitter was sadly turned off. I continue on with the internet only Cavalier Radio (cavalierradio.com), the successor internet station to WYBF (89.1-FM). For the time being it'll simply be a Philadelphia area FM rock station that's on the internet instead of on the FM airwave. That's really the way to think about it.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

UPDATE! (April 7th): After 13 months I HAVE RETURNED!!! It is great to be back on the airwaves at WYBF! I literally waited since Monday March 16th for the word to go back. In the very beginning this was only supposed to be two weeks, then two weeks became four additional weeks. Then Memorial Day came and went. Friday June 5th, suburban Philadelphia's first day in yellow phase came and went. June 26th, the first day in green phase came and went. And so on and so on. I completely believed I would be going back in late August. In the interim for 13 months, I continued to break new music on this page. It's not as much fun breaking new music on Facebook as of course it is breaking new music on the FM airwaves, but now I am back. Upon my return, my show has a name. For years I've been asked "what's the name of your show?" "What's your show called?" I never called it anything really, I didn't think it was necessary. A few years ago I was asked for a title to put up on the website (cavalierradio.com). So I just told our GM "Morning Drive" because, well, that's when I'm on. Now that I'm back, my show's title is "Essential Service Radio." Because, as we know, that's what it is!

Around 10:30PM July 13, 1985. One of three classics Bob did, backed by Keith Richards and Ron Wood at the end just before the "We Are the World" finale.

This was during the period when Keith and Mick Jagger weren't on speaking terms. This is also where, though not during this song, Bob suggests that maybe they could save a couple million for the farmers here in America, which is reportedly where Willie Nelson got the idea for Farm Aid.

40 years ago tonight, July 13th 1985, and it happened in Philadelphia.....

Sir Bob Geldof's effort towards African Famine relief Live Aid took place in two locations, here in Philadelphia at JFK Stadium, and in London at Wembley Stadium. Both stadiums are gone now, where JFK once stood now stands the Wells Fargo Center, and a new Wembley Stadium was built in London to replace the original.

You could talk all day about Live Aid (and one look at this page it seems I have!), but this performance is from Mick Jagger's solo set (Mick and Keith Richards were not getting along at the time) which happened at around 10PM at night or so, backed up by Daryl Hall and John Oates and their band, about an hour or so after the Led Zeppelin and Crosby Stills Nash and Young respective reunions.

After "Lonely at the Top" and the Stones' "Miss You" the closing of Mick's 15 minute or so set featured Tina Turner, who we lost sadly a couple years ago. It's common knowledge Mick spent the Fall 1969 Stones comeback tour of America watching Tina from the wings. 16 years later, this dynamite duet features the classic move by Mick where he tears off Tina's skirt, a skilled move that Justin Timberlake tried to replicate two decades later with Janet Jackson but with disastrous results, a moment which continues to live in FCC infamy.
Like many I saw the whole show on TV.

"State of Shock" comes from the previous year's "Victory" album from The Jacksons where Mick dueted with Michael Jackson on the song.

Incredibly Mick will turn 82. Harder still to believe. Long may Sir Michael Phillip Jagger run.

Hard to believe so much time has passed. It was 40 years ago tonight. And it happened in Philadelphia.

Sadly the surviving members of this band would rather have us forget this ever took place, but it's great then that they did decide to go with the emotion of the moment. It's still riveting today. And it happened in Philadelphia.

Under-rehearsed, missed cues, out of tune guitar, sloppy at times, the band has slagged off this performance over the years in interviews. "It wasn't REALLY Led Zeppelin now was it." Robert Plant was quoted as saying not too long after.

40 years ago tonight, July 13th, 1985 at around 8:10 PM or so at JFK Stadium, the surviving members of Led Zeppelin reunited for the first time. Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones along with drummer Tony Thompson from Chic and the Power Station, Paul Martinez from Plant's solo band on bass (on Stairway) and Phil Collins on drums.

MTV carried the entire show live ("gavel to gavel coverage") from both Wembley Stadium in London and here in Phila. Dick Clark went on ABC-TV at 8 for a three hour cherry-picked highlight show, I think they only showed "Stairway to Heaven" on the ABC broadcast.

Yes the Zeppelin set is not perfect. Far from it. It's ragged, under-rehearsed, the mix is off, Plant misses a couple of cues, his voice cracks, the drums crash in awkwardly, etc. Like my brother said immediately afterward, "You could tell it was a pick-up band." But despite all that, Page's solo on "Stairway to Heaven" remains transcendent, living up to the very legend it helped create. But it’s great to remember that, for once, they went with the moment. For the fans.

No I was not there, watched the entire day on MTV.
This reunion did take place, 40 years ago tonight, July 13, 1985, here in Philadelphia.

This is not an official Live Aid upload, the band did not permit this to be released as part of the 2004 expansive DVD box set. This is the best transfer (audio/video) I could find on youtube.

Complete set:
Rock n' Roll
Whole Lotta Love
Stairway to Heaven

For years on this date I aired "Stairway to Heaven" from this night on my WYBF-(89.1FM) show. Undoubtly the ONLY FM rock station in Philadelphia that did THAT!!

Fun fact: that's the legendary promoter Bill Graham shouting the individual band members' names at the end, a classic Graham touch.

Live Aid, 40 years ago today. July 13, 1985

After Clapton finishes, around 7:50PM, and while the stage crew prepares the stage for the forthcoming Led Zeppelin reunion, Phil Collins goes out in front of the curtains to perform the same two songs he did earlier during Sting's set that morning at Wembley in London.

"Against All Odds" and..."that bloody song again (LOL)" "In the Air Tonight."

Around 7:30 or so 40 years ago tonight July 13, 1985, Eric Clapton and band performs a great three song set at JFK: "White Room" "She's Waiting" and closes with "Layla."

Clapton's band in the mid-'80's featured Donald 'Duck" Dunn from Booker T and the MG's, Chris Stainton on keys and Jaimie Oldaker on drums, joined by Phil Collins, who had just arrived via the Concorde after playing earlier in the day at Wembley.

At around 5 our time, 40 years ago today, Wembley wrapped up with Paul McCartney at Elton John's piano for a quick "Let it Be."

Only problem was his mic was out and all that could be heard was the piano. The bottom youtube video restores the vocal.

The MTV TV coverage and ABC radio coverage of the day's events at both stadiums can only be characterized as atrocious at best. This coverage should serve as a lesson to future broadcasters in what NOT to do when covering a large-scale major event.

A surviving Beatle reunion was crazy-rumored all the previous week. Even I knew that wasn't going to happen, but these rumor mongers all week were merciless. So when Paul is joined at the end by organizer Bob Geldof, Pete Townshend David Bowie and Alison Moyet, the TV transmission showed a far shot from the stage, some stupid ABC Radio announcer said "a reunion is taking place..." only to have embarrassing egg fogón on his face once a close-up was shown. That was the biggest screw-up in a day full of big broadcast screw ups. A dark cloud on an otherwise great day.

What hasn't been said already about this classic Live Aid Queen set 40 years ago today.

The legend of this set has only grown exponentially over the years since the untimely 1991 passing of Freddie Mercury, and the subsequent Queen movie from a few years ago.

The Who ending their set with "Won't Get Fooled Again." This and "Love Reign O'er Me" were what most people saw because of the satellite outage at the beginning of set opener "My Generation" and coming back just at the end of "Pinball Wizard."

Roger Daltrey comes in too soon with the middle-eight. Pete Townshend slips and falls at the beginning of the reprise at the end, followed by a mock fall by Daltrey to try to cover, a nice touch by Daltrey to his bandmate.
