Sharing an inside look and an opening date of January 27 for Raleigh’s first Raising Cane’s on Hillsborough Street across from NCSU.

The exterior preserves the historic marquee as a nod to the Varsity Theatre, which originally opened here in 1941.

Inside, you’ll find the brand’s official mascot “Cane”, a yellow Labrador Retriever.

Is the iconic “hair curler” getting a companion “comb”?

Last month, we reported that the 1969-built Holiday Inn Raleigh Downtown was officially approved as a historic landmark.

Renovations are already underway to convert the building into a 204-room Hotel Indigo, complete with a top-floor bar and event space, slated to open in late 2026.

Now, the same New York–based developer, Tidal Real Estate Partners, has submitted new plans for a 12-story hotel on the adjacent parking lot.

The proposal looks strikingly similar to this previous rendering we shared back when the Holiday Inn faced demolition: roughly 180 guest rooms, a bar and lounge, a restaurant, plus an outdoor pool and patio.

Two hotels, side by side? This one has us pulling our hair out.

Big changes are on deck for the former K-Mart site at Western Boulevard and I-440.

As we previously reported, Raleigh developer CityPlat plans to redevelop the property into a $500 million mixed-use destination, featuring multiple towers rising up to 20 stories.

This week, Raleigh City Council officially approved the rezoning with construction on the front site along Western Boulevard slated to start in two years.

In the meantime, the existing building is undergoing renovations to accommodate multiple tenants, with most expected to open by mid-year. We’ll be taking a sneak peek at these businesses in the weeks ahead.

Tensions flared last night at the Raleigh City Council public hearing for rezoning case Z-34-25 — a contentious request by developer Kane Realty to increase the height of four future towers in North Hills up to 37 stories.

The previous proposal in 2023 was withdrawn following strong opposition from neighborhoods — citing concerns over overcrowding, traffic congestion, and insufficient infrastructure.

Kane said timing is right to resubmit, pointing to a more pro-urban growth makeup of the current City Council.

As the 12-minute public input period expired, tensions escalated. Several opponents shouted at Mayor Cowell and council members. This man who attempted to speak was escorted out.

The City Council ultimately voted to defer the rezoning decision to January 20.
