Packed attendance at last night’s “West at Peace” meeting as residents, skaters, and the developer clashed over the rezoning bid to boost height from 12 to 30 stories.

The Raleigh Planning Commission already gave a 9-0 green light, but most attendees raised hands in opposition, citing affordability concerns, the developer’s inadequate $1.2M housing fund pledge, and the future of Conlon Family Skate Park and Endless Grind.

The developer rep did disclose that they are working with Endless Grind to find a temporary home and possibly rehome the skate shop in the new development when complete.

A final vote from City Council is expected before October. Notable attendees included:

• Raleigh Mayor Janet Cowell
• Raleigh City Councilor Jane Harrison from District D where the site sits
• Raleigh City Planner Matthew Klem
• Jason Barron, laywer representing the developer, Raleigh Development Company
• Roy Attride, lead advocate of Raleigh Neighbors United, residents opposing the plan

The public is invited to 3 upcoming drop-in workshops starting next Tuesday to ask questions and provide feedback on the redevelopment of Lake Crabtree County Park.

RDU Airport Authority is partnering with Tom Dundon’s (Canes owner) Pacific Elm Properties to redevelop 136 acres of the existing park at I-40/Aviation Parkway into a recreation and wellness destination.

Potential plans include a US National Whitewater Center, outdoor sports, zip-lining, and ice skating paired with shopping, dining, and lodging.

This past Tuesday, the Raleigh Planning Commission voted 9-0 to recommend rezoning "West at Peace" across Publix/Smoky Hollow from 12 to 30 stories, pending final City Council vote by October.

The redevelopment has also sparked backlash from Raleigh's skateboarding community, who fear it will mean the end of Endless Grind Skate Shop — Raleigh's oldest skateboard shop since 1986 — with Skate Raleigh's adjacent Conlon Family Skatepark already slated to be replaced by Smoky Hollow park.

Endless Grind Acting Manager and lifelong resident Miguel Magallanes says skaters are being pushed aside: "The city as a whole needs to look at this development and the demolition of Skate Raleigh and Endless Grind to say this is not okay for our skate community".

With the recent loss of "Graveside" skatepark when the City of Raleigh annexed land for redevelopment, many of our followers see this as another blow to local skaters:

– "tearing down endless grind would be unforgivable"

- "Raleigh's everlasting war against kids having a positive outlet continues"

– "more places to sleep for the wealthy and fewer places with culture for the working class"

For Miguel, it would mean losing his job. Rent at the shop has been the same since 1986. While community pleas to save Endless Grind remains uncertain — many fear the outcome is already decided.

A public meeting hosted by Five Points CAC and Mordecai CAC is planned for tomorrow Monday August 18 from 7-8:30 pm at Halifax Park Community Center (1023 Halifax Street).
