Iranians across North Carolina gathered at the Wake County Courthouse to protest recent actions by the Iranian government, including the deaths of more than 3,300 demonstrators.

Voicing frustration with the Iranian government and citing widespread human rights abuses and a struggling economy.

A candlelight vigil was held to honor the lives lost fighting for freedom and to appeal to President Trump to intervene.

This week, Trump threatened military action against Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, after Khamenei labeled Trump a “criminal” for encouraging unrest.

Since then, Trump has backed down from those threats.

Campo Taco Co. just opened next to Dix Park. They specialize in lots of different street tacos. What do you like in your tacos?

Our favorites are the blackened cod, pork belly, and lengua (beef tongue).

There’s free parking at The Row and a $10 lunch menu.

A NASCAR track is coming to the State Farmers Market and Dix Park! Not really.

The City of Raleigh is moving ahead with the $20 million Lake Wheeler Road improvement project to transform Lake Wheeler Road from South Saunders Street to Maywood Avenue into a “Complete Street".

Designed to improve mobility and connectivity for pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers alike, features will include:

🚧 Roundabouts
🚧 Sidewalks, shared paths, and bike-only facilities
🚧 Raised intersections along side streets
🚧 Transit improvements
🚧 A raised median
🚧 Stormwater facilities

Private utility companies have already begun relocating utility lines, and the construction contractor, Rifenburg, is expected to start erosion control and earth-moving work soon.

WEATHER ALERT — Rain moves in overnight and into the morning. Snow is expected from noon through the afternoon with the potential for accumulation.

Precipitation is expected to end Sunday evening, but dropping temperatures could cause roads to freeze Sunday night into early Monday, creating hazardous driving conditions.

Tomorrow, the Walk for Peace continues to Lexington and Thomasville, North Carolina.

Please keep the Buddhist monks in your thoughts as they navigate these changing weather conditions.

Yesterday, the Shop Local Raleigh board released a second statement responding to the controversy over comments made by their Executive Director Jennifer Martin on December 20, in which she denied the existence of the transgender community.

Both statements have drawn strong criticism from local organizations and small businesses such as the LGBT Center of Raleigh, which says the responses fall short of accountability and taking decisive action.

Further pointing to the contradiction between Shop Local Raleigh's claims of promoting inclusion among local businesses and leadership remarks that dismiss the existence of an entire community.

Since the incident surfaced in December, Shop Local Raleigh has disabled comments and tags across its social media.

Shop Local Raleigh is a paid membership organization for local small businesses and produces events such as Brewgaloo, Food Truck Rodeos, Falling for Local, and the Raleigh Christmas Parade.

Yesterday, Taz’s Supermarket closed for good.

A sad final chapter in the fatal stabbing and death of then 27-year-old Mark Garrity in early April 2023 by Tasieer Zarka — owner of Taz’s Supermarket on Wilmington Street in downtown Raleigh.

Zarka claims Garrity was stealing a Gatorade but in December 2024, Wake County Judge Gregory handed Zarka the maximum sentence of 5-7 years.

This week, Garrity’s family was awarded a $1.3 million settlement in a wrongful death lawsuit.

We met Amy Garrity, Mark’s mother, just days after the tragedy where Amy told us how she'll never know why something so senseless happened and it would never bring Mark back.

The property, along with Tattoo Supreme next door, was bought out by Empire Properties, which owns several downtown properties and eateries including Raleigh Times, Sitti, Mecca, and The Pit.

Today marks Day 83 (1/16/2026) of the Walk for Peace — a 120-day, 2,300-mile journey led by Buddhist monks as they walk through 10 states to promote unity and compassion across America and the World.

The monks are in North Carolina and will walk from Concord to China Grove today.

We are working with Walk for Peace and as the lead coordinator for the City of Raleigh to provide a welcoming experience during their journey through Raleigh.

1) Schedule — Walk for Peace is estimated to arrive in Raleigh on Saturday 1/24.

2) Route — Exact routes are not shared until day of, though we will provide details earlier if permitted. The NC State Capitol in downtown Raleigh is an intended stop. View the route map and tracker: http://bit.ly/49KGaBR.

3) Needs — We have secured primary providers but welcome any additional options for Lodging, Food, Health & Personal Care, and Dog Care.

4) Guidance — Many of you have asked for guidance in welcoming the Buddhist monks. See attached DOs & DON'Ts.

Local organizations, businesses, and individuals interested in assisting may continue to email us at [email protected].
