I used Behr Dynasty, Benjamin Moore Aura, Farrow and Ball Modern Emulsion, HGTV Home Infinity, Sherwin-Williams Emerald, and Valspar Reserve, each brand’s top of the line wall paint. In doing this experiment, my biggest takeaway is that people are extremely loyal to their favorite paint brand, myself included. This whole thing started because I used a paint for a project that I don’t often use and I was happily surprised by the good coverage it provided! So knowing I was going into this with some bias, I tried to make everything as objective and equal as possible.
I purchased the top line of paint from each brand in an eggshell sheen (except for Sherwin-Williams, who doesn’t have eggshell, so I used satin for SW). I chose one color and tried to get each brand to color match to that color. Each of the paints was tested on a piece of drywall that was primed with the same primer. I used new, identical roller covers for each paint, and they all had equal drying times.
And if you’re here to tell me that your favorite paint wasn’t tested fairly because it requires 30 days to cure (30 DAYS 💀), I covered that too. I kept each drywall sheet and re-ran the durability tests at the 30 day mark. And guess what- the rankings for durability did not change. They all still performed exactly the same. And who has 30 days to let their walls cure before living in that painted space? That argument honestly makes me want to deduct points for the cure time, or give points to other paints that have a faster cure time!
So what do you think? Does this make you want to try a new paint? Which brand is your favorite?
