Comics History: MC Squared #1. Written by Roland Laird, a fierce community advocate. After 2 issues of MC Squared, he would go on to write “Still I Rise: A Graphic History of African Americans” with his wife - now an Associate Professor at .

Roland and Taneisha later cofounded MIST Harlem, a community entertainment hub designed to preserve African American and Latino culture amid rapid gentrification.

The Lairds’ story is far too expansive to fit an IG caption, and continues despite Roland’s passing in 2013. Still, this comic is a great chapter to reflect on.
