Could state-controlled booze be on the way out? Members of the NC House Select Committee on Government Efficiency say the Alcoholic Beverage Control Commission could be improved—or replaced entirely. Co-chair Rep. Keith Kidwell emphasized the need to study the cost of privatizing the system.

While ABC Commission chairman Hank Bauer warned that privatization could cost the state money, Kidwell countered that fees and tax rates could be restructured to offset losses.

So, the age-old debate over state-run vs. private liquor sales continues. Stay tuned.

What if we told you $10 could help provide transitional housing for a family trying to get back on their feet?

For our annual Give Raleigh campaign, we’ve partnered with the Cooper Charitable Foundation, supporting seven local organizations providing life-changing services—from emergency shelter and meals to counseling and life skills. Plus, TowneBank and Towne Insurance will match the first $10,000 in donations—so your gift goes twice as far.

Your donation can help provide:
💸 Transitional housing, rental arrears assistance and utility payments via Family Promise of the Triangle
💸 Shelter + nonmedical detox at Healing Transitions
💸 Furnishings, appliances, cookware and other household items via The Green Chair Project
💸 Meals, showers & laundry through Oak City Cares
💸 Tuition, fees and mentorship for former foster youth via WTCC Fostering Bright Futures
💸 Counseling, case management and clothing via The Women’s Center
💸 Short-term housing & training at The Carying Place

Even $10 makes a difference when combined with others’ gifts. Every dollar counts—and no one should have to wonder where they’ll sleep tonight.

The controversial project at West and Peace streets is officially moving forward. The Raleigh City Council approved Raleigh Development Co.’s rezoning proposal to build up to a 30-story mixed-use apartment building at the intersection. The project also allocates $1.2 million to Raleigh’s affordable housing fund.

Many residents and businesses opposed the controversial rezoning, citing proximity to several homes. Council voted 6-2 to pass the project, with council members Jane Harrison and Christina Jones voting against it.

It isn’t clear when the project will break ground.
