// Damage Controlman Fireman Kedric Brown from San Diego monitors equipment during an operational check of an aqueous film foaming station aboard the aircraft carrier USS George H.W. Bush.

“Joining the Navy was a backup plan for not going straight into college,” says Brown, whose father and uncle both served in the Navy, and who now plans to serve for a full 20 years. “My proudest accomplishment is not giving up. A lot of people I've known have either quit or gotten separated. Serving in the Navy means doing something that not many other people do.”

Completed in 2009, USS George H. W. Bush is the tenth and final Nimitz-class supercarrier of the United States Navy. She is named for the 41st President of the United States and former Director of Central Intelligence George H. W. Bush, who was a naval aviator during World War II. The vessel’s callsign is Avenger after the Avenger aircraft then-Lieutenant George H. W. Bush flew in World War II.

Today, San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance won the Grand Marshal Award at the 137th annual Rose Parade with a float inspired by the architects of the earth — elephants. The Alliance received the Grand Marshal Award given for most outstanding creative concept and float design. The award-winning float, “Giant Strides Together,” transported viewers to the all-new Denny Sanford Elephant Valley. The largest and most transformative project in San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance’s 109-year history, Elephant Valley will open on March 5 at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park.

"This year’s float celebrates the majesty of elephants and the immersive experience guests visiting Denny Sanford Elephant Valley will soon get to experience,” says Shawn Dixon, president and chief executive officer, San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance. “We’re excited to receive this honor as we prepare to welcome the world to walk alongside these magnificent animals like never before.”

The float featured intricate designs of a few members of the Safari Park’s iconic African savanna elephant herd: matriarch Swazi and her daughter Qinisa, as well as Umngani and her daughter Mkhaya. The latter mother-daughter duo Umngani and Mkhaya gained international recognition in 2025 when they, along with other members of the herd, were seen forming a protective “alert circle” during an earthquake.

Each purposefully designed aspect representing this keystone species and the ecosystems they serve came to life with mesmerizing plants and a dazzling array of flowers. The world-famous San Diego Zoo and San Diego Zoo Safari Park are leading zoological institutions and proudly accredited botanical gardens. This gives San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance a special edge as it leverages its own experts to grow plants that can be used on its floats including, most notably, the savanna grasses featured this year.

Elephant Valley is an immersive journey for guests to learn about the crucial role elephants serve as ecosystem engineers, and better understand the nuances of the herd’s rich social structure. Surrounded by elephants on multiple sides, guests will encounter what it feels like to walk beside the herd. The dynamic savanna at the heart of the Safari Park aims to generate greater empathy, understanding, and appreciation for elephants, encouraging guests to protect them for generations to come. This new experience will offer new insight into the role San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance pursues as a leader in wildlife conservation, highlighting its global partners and celebrating the vibrant cultures and local communities in Kenya where people and elephants coexist.

// Legendary Navy Pilot Becomes Eligible for the Military’s Highest Honor

On November 18, 1952, while then lieutenant Royce Williams and three other Navy pilots were flying their F9F-5 Panther jets along the Yalu River, the borderline between North Korea and the former Soviet Union, they spotted seven Soviet MiG-15s overhead.

The appearance of the MiGs and engine trouble forced the three other pilots to return to their carrier, leaving Williams in a one-man dogfight with seven MiGs for 35 minutes. Williams was ordered back to the carrier as well, but he reported he was fighting for his life.

Demonstrating both unparalleled skill and heroics, Williams shot down four of the MiGs and likely hit two others. In the end, there was only one MiG still in the sky with him, and Williams was able to return to the carrier. He was uninjured, but there were 263 bullet holes in his aircraft.

The Soviet Union was not officially involved in the Korean conflict, and the legendary encounter was kept secret for 50 years and never officially reported on until records from the Korean War were declassified in 2002.

Since then, those aware of Williams’ actions that day have campaigned intensively for him to receive the Medal of Honor, the military’s highest award, given to those who have distinguish themselves “through conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of life above and beyond the call of duty.”

Earlier this month, Congress approved the 2026 National Defense Authorization Act, which includes language that removes existing time constraints in considering Williams for this great honor.

Williams, who lives in Escondido, turned 100 in April.
