✨ Stars. Sand. Swayze. ✨

Nobody puts Baby in a corner — especially not on one of Southern California’s most iconic beaches.

The Coronado Island Film Festival invites movie lovers to its annual Movie on the Beach fundraiser on June 26, featuring a sunset screening of Dirty Dancing beneath the stars at the legendary Hotel del Coronado.

Guests can kick back with their toes in the sand, enjoy themed cocktails, gather around glowing bonfires, and dance along to a nostalgic soundtrack before the beloved classic lights up the big screen. DJ Trisha Lynn and Marilyn Klisser of Club Coronado will keep the energy high, while a limited number of private fire pit lounges offer an elevated way to experience the evening.

More than a memorable summer night, the event supports CIFF’s year-round arts, education, and cultural programming.

// U.S. Navy Showcasing ‘Strike Group’ Mixed-Reality Experience at NASCAR San Diego

Friday, June 19 through Sunday, June 21, the U.S. Navy will showcase its “Strike Group” multi-scenario, mixed-reality experience during NASCAR San Diego weekend. The Strike Group is designed to demonstrate the breadth and depth of Navy STEM careers in the most realistic ways possible.

Using leading-edge mixed reality, the Strike Group provides students with a fully immersive, hands-on experience with the technology central to every role in the Navy.

“A STEM career in the Navy provides a life-changing experience filled with adventure, teamwork, and support,” says Rear Admiral James P. Waters, Commander, Navy Recruiting Command.

The Strike Group comprises three distinct, interactive challenges: In “All Hands,” Players will test their skills on the flight deck of the aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford; in “Train,” a Navy SEAL trainer guides participants through a series of challenges focusing on their physical strength and mental fortitude; and in “Seek,” participants take part in a real-life submarine mission under the North Pole.

// Coronado Resident Competes for Team Navy in the 2026 Warrior Games

Navy veteran Ma’khai Pennington, a resident of Coronado, will compete against athletes from the U.S. Army, U.S. Marine Corps, U.S. Air Force, U.S. Space Force, and U.S. Special Operations Command during an eight-day competition in which he will compete in archery, powerlifting, wheelchair basketball, and wheelchair rugby.

Pennington will join more than 200 seriously wounded, ill, and injured service members and veterans at the Warrior Games, June 13 through 20 in San Antonio, Texas.

Hosted by the U.S. Army Transformation and Training Command, this annual adaptive-sports competition highlights the exceptional physical skills and mental toughness of seriously wounded active-duty and veteran service members.

Now in its 16th year, the Warrior Games celebrates the valor, recovery, and resilience of wounded veterans along with their families, using the power of the games to drive healing, empowerment and renewed purpose.

Pennington, who joined the Navy in 2023, suffered traumatic brain injuries. Through adaptive sports, he rediscovered laughter with his new team.

// Airman Apprentice Jose Morales, a native of Vista, serves aboard the aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson, homeported in San Diego.

“One of the lessons I carry with me is the importance of listening,” says Morales, who graduated from San Marcos High School in 2020. “When people are talking, giving you advice, take it in. There are a lot of people with experience who want to help you out, and all you have to do is listen.”

Morales joined the Navy nine months ago and today serves as an aviation ordnance man.

“I joined the Navy because it’s a good, steady job,” Morales says. “It also offers a lot of opportunities, and it helps you learn discipline and responsibility.”

For the last century, aircraft carriers have been the centerpiece of America’s naval forces.

Carl Vinson returned last summer from deployment to the U.S. 3rd, 5th, and 7th Fleet areas of operations, during which it conducted freedom of navigation operations and multinational exercises with U.S. allies and partners.

Back in its home port, Carl Vinson remains a combat-ready force dedicated to protecting and defending the United States.
