The Country Friends Art of Fashion, an annual celebration of fall and philanthropy, takes to the runway on September 11 at The Inn at Rancho Santa Fe featuring selections from the fall-winter collections of South Coast Plaza’s leading luxury retailers including Bally, Balmain, Camilla, Eleventy, Max Mara, Monique Lhuillier, Oscar de la Renta, and Stella McCartney.

Award-winning broadcast journalist and community leader Sandra Maas is the event’s honorary chair, with longtime community volunteer Sophia Alsadek and Anna Laurel, award-winning news anchor and reporter at KFMB-TV/News 8, serving as co-chairs. Emcee is 13-time Emmy Award-winning anchor for ABC 10News Kimberly Hunt.

The event, from 10am to 4pm, begins with a champagne reception on The Inn’s lawn, a photo lounge, and an opportunity drawing featuring designer handbags, staycations, and spa treatments. Guests can shop at South Coast Plaza mini-boutiques including Bally, Balmain, Camilla, Max Mara, Oscar de la Renta, and Vitra Eyewear, with ten percent of sales benefiting The Country Friends. Centerpiece of the Art of Fashion is the runway show followed by a three-course luncheon with wine and a live auction. The event concludes with “Sip, Shop, and Support,” the opportunity to continue shopping while mingling with friends.

// In the South China Sea, Naval Aircrewman 3rd Class Nicholas Johnson from San Marcos practices routine safety precautions in a Sea Hawk attached to the “Black Knights” of Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 4, as it flies over the aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson.

Vinson, the flagship of Carrier Strike Group ONE, is conducting operations in the U.S. 7th Fleet area of operations. The 7th Fleet is the largest forward-deployed U.S. fleet, with 50 to 70 ships, 150 aircraft, and 27,000 sailors and marines, whose responsibilities include providing joint command during natural disasters and military operations in the Indo-Pacific region.

Homeported in San Diego, the amphibious assault ship USS Makin Island is getting a new crew member, a one-year-old labrador mix named Raider, trained by local nonprofit Shelter to Soldier.

Shelter to Soldier has been training rescue dogs to be psychiatric service animals for military veterans for a decade, and now in direct coordination with the U.S. Navy, Raider
will be the first Shelter to Soldier dog to serve as a “morale dog” on a Navy ship.

The program is a natural outgrowth of Shelter to Soldier’s ongoing efforts, which include therapy dog days with our sailors on their ships when they are in port.
