HARTINGTON — Convicted murderer Jason Jones will learn on April 10, 2026, whether he will face the death penalty or spend the rest of his life in prison.
A three-judge panel heard evidence and arguments during a two-hour mitigation hearing Thursday in Cedar County District Court.
The hearing was held to determine whether the panel believes there is sufficient evidence to warrant the death penalty or whether mitigating circumstances should instead result in a life sentence.
Defense attorney Todd Lancaster told the judges he believes four mitigating factors apply in the case and that Jones should receive a life sentence rather than the death penalty.
This is a developing story. Check Hartington.net for updates.

Flashback Friday — Nov. 13, 1930
Randolph’s own “Shorty” Allison made headlines for Creighton University after sparking a last-minute rally against Drake. With less than five minutes left, Allison ripped off a 19-yard run and hauled in a key pass to set up the Blue Jays’ only touchdown of the day. Not bad for a hometown grid star!
