THE TANK is an acoustical marvel, a spiritually altering experience found nowhere else on earth.

A 65’ tall, 37’ across rusted steel water tank – never used – was discovered in Rangely, Colorado by sound artist and sonic thinker Bruce Odland in 1976. A small group of musicians and sound artists has been recording there ever since. The Tank Center for Sonic Arts is an organization of eclectic artists, sonic explorers, and practical minds who have come together to save and develop this magnificent acoustic resource. This growing organization seeks to introduce courageous performers and passionate listeners to THE TANK, to make the music recorded at the TANK available through the TANK CHANNEL, and to use the TANK as a way to bring the community of Rangely together with musicians and sound artists from around the world for education, cultural exchange, and performance.

On Saturday, September 5, 2026, The Tank presents an extraordinary group of singers, David Hykes and the Harmonic Choir: Hykes, Timothy Hill, Seth Markel, and Blandine Hardillier.

Hykes is an American composer, singer, musician, author and meditation teacher. A pioneer in new music, contemplative chant, and healing sounds, he founded Harmonic Chant in New York in 1975, the year he also founded his legendary group, The Harmonic Choir, considered to be one of the world’s pre-eminent overtone ensembles.

Just a few of tickets left for seats inside the TANK, but more are available for outdoor seating, under the stars.

Today (2026-08-16) marks fifty years since Bruce Odland was waylaid by a couple of Rangely locals and taken to a huge, abandoned water tank for a kind of hazing. They put him through the only entrance, a 19-inch porthole, and banged on the outside with rocks and boards.

When they stopped banging, Bruce found himself in an astonishing sound cloud. He immediately brought his musician friends back to the Tank for their first session in it.

A decade later, Bruce brought another group of musicians to the Tank and began to record a first album, Leaving Eden, on an early digital two-track machine. Booming percussion, delicate keyboards, a children’s choir, a male chorus, penny whistles, Irish pipes, and much else, in many layers of late-night Tank recordings.

After years of further work--recording, mixing, mastering--Leaving Eden came out on CD in 1991.

Then, last spring, Bruce found the original 24-track digital master of the album and was astonished to hear the rich detail of the mix. So much had been lost on that early CD.

And so, to honor this anniversary, celebrate Bruce’s history in the Tank, and reclaim the lost glory of this record, the Tank is releasing a newly remastered mix of Leaving Eden on the Tank’s Round Sound label. Out this fall.

Last week the incredible LaFrae Sci (Imaginationist/Technologist/Composer Black-futuristic/orchestral/experimental-entrepreneur, curriculum dvlpr, educator, facilitator, Conductor) recorded a beautiful piece, Kaze (KahZeh), in a remote TANK session.
