URGENT: Crews are responding to a fast moving timber and grass fire reported at approximately 6:30 p.m. off of Flormann and Skyline Drive. The fire is threatening structures, and multiple homes have been evacuated.

Please stay away from the area and avoid all non essential travel near the incident to allow emergency responders to work safely and efficiently.

If you are in the affected area, follow instructions from emergency personnel and be prepared to leave immediately if directed. Additional updates will be provided as information becomes available.

A grass fire started by juveniles using fireworks was contained and extinguished by responding fire crews near the intersection of Catron Boulevard and Dan Christy Lane. Flames were observed reaching one to two feet in height and the fire was spreading quickly in dry conditions.

Firefighters were able to get a strong hold on the fire upon arrival and prevented further spread beyond the initial area. The fire reached approximately one quarter acre in size.

This incident is a reminder that fireworks can ignite fast moving fires in dry conditions. Even a small ignition source can quickly become dangerous when vegetation is dry and winds are present. We urge the public to use extreme caution with fireworks WHERE THEY ARE PERMITTED and to consider the current fire danger before use.

As we gear up for Independence Day and the ‘America 250’ celebrations, the RCPD and Rapid City Fire Department want to remind everyone of the local fireworks laws:

Fireworks are NOT allowed within Rapid City limits or the Black Hills Fire Protection District. Only small novelties (like sparklers and snappers) are permitted. Discharging illegal fireworks in town or within one mile of city limits can result in a fine of up to $500, 30 days in jail, and confiscation. RCPD, RCFD, and Code Enforcement will have extra teams on duty strictly responding to fireworks complaints. Those wishing to report disruptive fireworks can do so by contacting dispatch at 605-394-4131.

“Independence Day should be a time for celebration, not tragedy,” says Fire Chief Jason Culberson. “We want everyone to enjoy the holiday safely and legally by taking fireworks seriously, supervising children closely, and making smart decisions that reduce the risk of injury or fire.”

“We ask that Rapid City residents be considerate of their neighbors, remain mindful of local laws regarding fireworks, and above all else, be safe this Fourth of July,” says Rapid City Chief of Police Don Hedrick. “We’re fortunate to live in an area that provides a variety of choices for community-sanctioned fireworks displays. These public displays offer a great option for those seeking to include fireworks in their Fourth of July Festivities.”

The Rapid City Fire Department reminds the public that fireworks can cause serious injuries and fires in a matter of seconds. For those using fireworks at home in permitted areas, adults should closely supervise all activity, keep water and a first-aid kit nearby, wear eye protection, and make sure used fireworks are fully soaked before disposal. Sparklers should also be handled with caution, as they burn at approximately 1,200 degrees Fahrenheit.

The disruption impacting non-emergency phone lines for Pennington County Emergency Services Communications Center (ESCC) has been resolved.

Citizens may resume calling non-emergency numbers as usual and should no longer use the temporary lines provided in the previous release. As always, if you are experiencing an emergency, dial 911.

We appreciate the public’s patience and understanding while this disruption was being resolved.

There is currently a disruption impacting non-emergency phone lines for Pennington County Emergency Services Communications Center (ESCC).

If a citizen needs assistance and is unable to reach Pennington County ESCC on a non-emergency line, they should dial 911.

Calls and Text to 911 remain operational.

Efforts are underway to resolve the disruption. Please do not call 911 to test the system.

A Red Flag Warning is in effect today, Wednesday, June 17, from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. MDT for portions of southwestern South Dakota and northeastern Wyoming.
Strong northwest winds of 25 to 35 mph, with gusts up to 40 to 55 mph, combined with low humidity and very dry fuels will create critical fire weather conditions. Much of southwestern South Dakota has gone more than two weeks without meaningful rainfall, and ongoing drought conditions continue to increase fire danger.
Please avoid any outdoor burning and use extreme caution with anything that could cause a spark. Fires can start quickly and spread rapidly in these conditions.
