It’s the perfect day to because the WINTER TRAIL CHALLENGE officially begins today!

Hike all the trails listed below and take a selfie with each Winter Trail Challenge sign along the way. Once you’ve completed them, stop by the Visitor Center, show your selfies to our staff, and earn your 2025–26 Winter Trail Challenge pin.

The challenge runs through April 1, 2026, so you’ll have plenty of time to explore at your own pace.

• Grace Coolidge Walk-In

• Prairie Trail

• Needles Highway (North Side — only when the road is closed)

• Centennial Trail (South of Badger Hole Historic Site)

• Mount Coolidge Fire Tower

• French Creek Natural Area (Start at East Trailhead)

• “Snowshoe It” — borrow snowshoes from the Visitor Center and try them on any trail of your choice!

Due to a fire, Playhouse Road will be closed from Iron Mountain Road to the Needles Highway.

!ATTENTION! !WILDFIRE!!
There is currently a wildfire north of Playhouse Road just outside of the East Custer State Park boundary. Playhouse Road will be closed from Iron Mountain Road to the Needles Highway. Firefighters are making good progress in their suppression efforts.
We will pass along updates as soon as the road is reopened to the public. Thank you.

Don’t let the short distance fool you — this one’s a challenge! 🏔️
The Community Caves Trail starts with a creek crossing (which can get tricky depending on the season), followed by a steep climb that only gets tougher near the top. Expect loose rock, some hands-and-feet scrambling on the way up, and a few slides on the way down!

The reward? Incredible caves and views — totally worth it for older kids and adventurous adults. But fair warning: this trail isn’t ideal for little ones.
