Ghoulish secrets lurk within these gorgeous galaxies. Their rings are dotted with star graveyards! 👻

Visible light images reveal places where the galaxies’ rings are full of young stars and stellar nurseries. However, when we turn our X-ray telescopes to them, we see telltale signs of star’s remains dotted throughout their ghostly circles. The purple dots in the X-ray image show where neutron stars or black holes are siphoning off gas from companion stars like vampires. These gas-thirsty remains are beacons lighting the way to stellar graveyards.

This is EXACTLY what Jackson Hole, Wyoming is like. The people who do all the jobs that makes the world go round, can’t afford to live there either, having to commute from 60 of more miles away, each and every day.

The stacks of chicken broth and shelf-stable milk were dwindling as the food pantry entered the last minutes of the day and a 63-year-old woman in a Boston Red Sox mask hurried through the door.

Sharon Brown, the pantry director, greeted the woman at the front desk. As Brown logged the details she needed to collect into her system, the woman’s story unspooled: After 18 years of living on the island, her rent had suddenly shot up.

What Brown didn’t say out loud was that she knew this story well. That she and her 14-year-old son had moved three times since June. That in two weeks, when school began, she had no idea where they were going to live. Finding an affordable year-round rental on the Vineyard had become next to impossible.
