There’s a book called “Giving up Worry for Lent.” Have you tried it? I mean, giving up worry? It’s not so easy. But, like all problematic habits that become second-nature, it’s a matter of PRACTICE. Both the worrying and its opposite virtue: trustful surrender.
Enter the “worry” rosary. This is nothing official, ok? It’s something I pieced together out of personal necessity. So maybe you might find it helpful, too. Using an ordinary rosary, in place of the “mystery” you announce the first “worry” (it’s always good to articulate what’s bothering you, and telling Jesus about it is the best way to get rid of it), and then on the ten beads following, say the “Surrender Prayer:” O Jesus, I surrender myself to You. Take care of everything!
You can also replace the “worries” with your favorite lines from the Psalms:
- You are my hiding place. You keep me safe from distress; you surround me with cries of deliverance. (Ps. 32:7)
- Trust in the Lord and do good; find your delight in the Lord, who grants your hearts desire. (Ps. 37:3-4)
- Entrust your cares to the Lord, and he will support you. (Pa. 55:23)
- On the day when I shall fear, I will trust in you. (Ps. 56:4)
- As for me, I was always in your presence; you were holding me by the right hand. (Ps. 73:23)
- I waited, I waited for the Lord, and he stooped down to me; he heard my cry. (Ps. 40: 2)
You can also do it with any line from Scripture that inspires your trust in God. If your Bible is underlined, you’re all set! I think every time we say “Jesus, take care of everything,” we reinforce a much needed truth for ourselves. We trust in a lot of things other than Him, but no one is more worthy of our trust, our confidence, and our wholehearted surrender. He will indeed “take care of everything,” because as He Himself reminds us, “Fear is useless. What is needed is trust.”
