Fellow Americans, what image comes to mind when you think about the Poverty and Ghettos of this Nation? Mabye it’s some beat down 16 floor public housing tenement on the wrong side of town. Or perhaps a stretch of abandoned buildings, all with boards on the windows and doors. We are all aware that yes, they do exist.
Ghettos, shanties, shacks, trailer parks, tents; whatever the geographical terrain in any state, there lies a ghetto of some sort. All upholding inhuman standards of living for the country’s most impoverished inhabitants. Perhaps an even starker reality is that there are those “without a pot to p**s in, or a window to throw it out of”. In today’s society being too poor is a punishable offense by the law. In the city of Reading, Pennsylvania being poor is a crime. Whats even more criminal is the bureaucratic mismanagement and systemic oppression of people, funds and services. There is a wonton lack of compassion for other crucial components in the form of substandard aid and services commonly attributed to individual prosperity.
Most people couldn’t fathom or relate to living in a place with such extreme devistation and poverty. Just imagine living in a city which has placed in the top 5 poorest city in America well over a decade and running . A city currently ranked 2’nd in the state for lead exposure. The same small Pennsylvania town, that leads the state in arrest from constables on warrants from anything from school fines to just being too poor to pay off your old fines. The list continues, with this same little city leading the state in children separated from their families at the hands of Children and Youth Services. Beating both Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, the two largest cities in the state. These are the facts. For the residents, this is a reality. There’s also devistating water crisis, crippling families who where caught off guard by the sudden campaign to disconnect services to potentially thousands of residents delinquent on their bills.
Should we except the inevitable doom brought upon us by a soulless clique of elite thieves. After all where is our voice? What are our options but to tough it out? We’re a little place located due east of Philadelphia and Gettysburg. However there is no sight of a Calvary coming to save this day. All around the world Ghettos exist. Who’s telling they’re stories. America seems to take it lightly. Quick to make the matter a joke. Cartoons and comedy has been the country’s Poster child for these conditions. Germany’s answer is to hold on to hope of receiving your golden ticket one day out of the slums. Just like at Charlie’s house. Perhaps London has the best approach by putting a little twist on things like Oliver. It makes more cents. In all practicality no ones ever getting a Genie like Aladdin. All that’s left is to imagine. Imagining the possibilities of common people working together and sharing resources. It’s time.
