While I'm sad to see that Berks Arts is shutting down, I do feel that there's important lessons to take away from this moment. A) cooperation is key, and B) in the age of mega corporations, we simply must be more financially responsible. Spotlight PA checked their publicly available tax records and found they've been losing money for years. One has to wonder why they were so insistent on buying out large billboards, hiring expensive out of town acts, and keeping the events they ran at the scale they did despite these losses. We need to stop thinking bigger is better when it comes to community. Local word of mouth from trusted sources can be more powerful than expensive advertising. Local talent draws a crowd just as easily as global touring acts that come with hefty price tags. Berks County (and America as a whole) is in need of affordable, passion driven, local celebrations of art and culture. And we need to be open to letting younger people lead those efforts, their input is vital to the survival of our communities.
