This is “Die Katzensymphonie” (The Cat Symphony), by Austrian painter, Moritz von Schwind (01/21/1804 - 02/08/1871).

It is an unplayable violin melody, with the cats representing notes. Some have theorized that it is supposed to be poking fun at Wagner, whose music Schwind was not a fan of.

The drawing was made in 1868, using the mediums of pencil, pen, and brush. It was gifted to violinist, Joseph Joachim, in honor of his appointment as director of the Berlin University of Music. It now is part of a collection at the Staatliche Kunsthalle Karlsruhe.

As we reach the 2 week mark before heading back to campus we think it’s important to recognize who will be in and out of the office this year. Here is the E-Board for the 2024 - 2025 school year!

After 20 years of service, Mindy Cohen signed off as Director of WXAC Albright Radio and retired on January 15, 2024.

Mindy helped the radio station receive local, regional and national attention. Her love for music and expertise in media is only surpassed by her deep connection to our students. Along the way, she has mentored hundreds of student-interns, working closely to mentor, advise, support and encourage them. Throughout her tenure she has taught, chaperoned students at national media conferences as well as introduced students to a diverse array of music. She guided many students toward their career paths, and helped them in their search for self and meaning. This is exemplified in the many alumni who come back year after year to see their beloved Mindy.

Under Mindy’s leadership, WXAC has also partnered with many academic and campus life departments to offer cutting-edge information to our larger community. Most notably, Mindy has welcomed the Berks County LatinX community onto our campus and given LatinX music and news a home. WXAC now serves as a media training ground for students and community members alike.

In 2017, Mindy made WXAC a 24/7 broadcasting station, which allowed more students and community members to use their voices over the airways. WXAC was awarded the Silver Microphone Award for Outstanding Broadcasting Excellence from the Intercollegiate Broadcasting System in both 2016 and 2017. WXAC contributes to the life of the musical community at Albright with events such as Battle of the Bands and Pond Concerts.

With a strong sense of community service, equity and justice, Mindy used her leadership skills on many Albright committees including the Mission and Vision team, the Task Force on Race Relations and the Table.

In short, we will miss Mindy’s candor, fashion sense and witty sense of humor. But we wish her well, as she pursues world travels and shares her strong passion for upholding the rights of all of the world’s citizens.
