[Update 7:43 p.m.: Forward progress stopped]

Just before 7 p.m. this evening, a vegetation fire was reported about half a mile up Tompkins Hill Road, just north of Fortuna. A visible column of smoke was seen from Palmer Creek at the base of the hill. The fire, burning grass and brush, is estimated at one-tenth of an acre, and nearby structures are threatened. A full wildland response was initially dispatched, but air support, a hand crew, and a dozer have since been canceled, as incoming ground units are expected to manage the situation. Please avoid the area while crews continue their response.

🚨 TSUNAMI WARNING – What It Means for Humboldt and Del Norte Counties 🚨

A powerful 8.8 magnitude earthquake struck off the east coast of Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula earlier this afternoon. Initially issued as a tsunami watch, the advisory was upgraded to a tsunami warning by the National Tsunami Warning Center. The warning currently extends from the California–Oregon border south to Cape Mendocino, encompassing Del Norte and Humboldt counties.

While the wording of the alert may have alarmed many—especially with phone notifications going out widely across Humboldt—experts and local agencies emphasize that Humboldt is not expected to experience serious impacts at this time.

“We are now in the highest level of tsunami alert, which is a warning,” explained Lori Dengler, emeritus professor of geology at Cal Poly Humboldt. “However, nobody thinks this is going to be what we would expect from our worst-case Cascadia event.”

Dengler noted that the tsunami generated by this quake is significant—but not catastrophic for our region.

“This is a really big earthquake… tied for sixth place in the largest earthquake list ever recorded,” she said. “But Crescent City is the main concern, with possible surges of up to six feet. In Humboldt County, we’re not expecting that level of impact.”

Indeed, Humboldt County OES clarified, “While the alert referenced a Tsunami Warning, the National Weather Service has noted there is no expected inundation on land in the Humboldt Bay region. Humboldt County is currently forecast to have a maximum tsunami of approximately 1 foot.”

That means:

🌊 Stay off beaches, harbors, and marinas as a precaution.

🚨 There is no evacuations currently

📢 Humboldt County OES is monitoring the situation and will provide verified updates.

Similarly, the Shelter Cove Fire Department confirmed at 9 p.m. that, “Shelter Cove is not under a tsunami warning. There is no need to evacuate unless the National Weather Service upgrades our area. If that happens, we will activate the tsunami sirens and open the tsunami shelter at the Fire Station.”

As Dengler emphasized, the main risk lies in strong currents in bays and harbors, especially in Del Norte County, where some commercial boats have already headed out to deeper water as a precaution. In her words:

“This is not going to be as large a tsunami as the one produced in 2011 by the Japan earthquake… and that event didn’t do anything in Humboldt County.”

Stay alert, but not alarmed. Tsunami surges are expected to arrive just before midnight, and unusual activity could continue for the next 24 hours or longer—especially in harbors.
