The Veterans Day Program was held in the RVHS gymnasium this afternoon. This year’s guest speaker was Jerry Ludwig (SFC Ret.) Cmdr., Redwood Co VFW - Berlin Brigadex.
Jerry Ludwig enlisted in the US Army in November 1980. After basic and advanced training at Ft. Benning Georgia he volunteered to serve with the Berlin Brigade as an Anti-Tank Specialist. During the 32 Months spent patrolling the Berlin Wall he was awarded the "Distinguished Guardian of the City of Berlin" along with the Army of Occupation Medal.
Upon Honorable Discharge he enrolled at Southwest State University majoring in Agriculture Management. He re-enlisted in the Minnesota National Guard being assigned to 2nd Bn 135th Infantry, Redwood Falls. While there he graduated from the Minnesota Military Academy. Through reorganizations and peace dividends he earned five Military Occupational Specialites in Infantry and Engineer career fields. His leadership in small unit operation resulted in assignments as Rifle Platoon Leader and Engineer Assault Platoon Leader.
During his service he earned the Expert Infantry Badge, Numerous Good Conduct and Longevity Medals along with four awards of the Army Achievement Medal.
SFC Ludwig retired from the Minnesota National Guard with 20+ years of Service. He retired from USDA Farm Service Agency after 20 years. He currently serves as VFW Commander and board member of the Redwood Warriors Fund. He and Lori, spouse of 38 years, raised three children in the area. They currently reside in their home of 30 years along the Minnesota River Valley.
