Last Tuesday night, I hosted a super-fun studio hangout for some of my middle school musicians. 😍

First we took fun pictures with black angel wings and a hot pink skeleton named Pinkerton in front of silver streamers. Next we sang karaoke and performed songs for each other (Addison shredded on Megadeath, and Fiona played her very first original song). Then we finished off our time together doing the Macarena, the cha cha slide, and lots of very silly free-style dances - all under the disco lights.

I love hosting these little get-togethers. It’s such a joy to help my students meet fellow music-loving kids, build the confidence to share songs with each other, feel safe and care-free enough to get silly, and celebrate how cool it is to just be themselves. I’m so proud of them for showing up and being so kind to each other.

Damian and I gave Sound House a much-needed mini makeover today: weeding, weed-whacking, ripping invasive vines out of the big tree out back, uprooting dead plants, and planting new ones from the clearance section. There’s plenty more to do, but I’m limited by resources and the fact that I don’t own the building. We do our best though, and I think it looks super cute! 🌱

At the Showcase, twelve-year-old Rosalie Schiller wowed a packed house with her big voice and solid rhythm guitar work. Some audience members were moved to tears while others murmured about how impressed they were with the beauty of her vocal tone. She’s one to watch here in the Sound House Community! Stay tuned for a clip of her performance.

(the final) PERFORMER SPOTLIGHT 💡

Melody Larue is an indie pop/rock vocalist and bassist from Warrenton. Although only a junior in high school, Melody has been playing instruments and singing for many years. For a while she dabbled on piano, guitar, and clarinet, but now her main focuses are vocals – both lead and harmony – and bass, along with being a member of percussion in her high school band’s wind ensemble.

Her father, a professional musician for many years, taught and supported her throughout her journey of instruments, especially bass. To expand further upon her musical knowledge, Melody began taking lessons with Maddi at Sound House in 2021.

With performance experience under her belt from playing with her former band, The Sunstones, Melody is anxious to mount the stage once again. With three originals currently released, you can expect to hear one of her originals during her performance at the 2025 Sound House Showcase. Her debut song, “doses”, introduces the idea of balance, whereas her most recent release, “unfound”, expands on the concept of feeling alone. Both the vocals and instrumentals on these singles will leave you with goosebumps when the song ends.

The Villains are a new band composed of frenemies Addison Murphy and Brooklynn Bushore. Addison is a thirteen year old shredder who has been studying at Sound House since fifth grade. Despite being forced into jazz bands lately, Addison’s first love (and true love) will always be metal. Brooklynn is a twelve year old drummer who first came to Sound House as a voice student. Recently, she’s revealed herself to also be a promising young drummer. The two have come together for an epic cover of “Orion” by Metallica at this, the fourth annual Sound House Showcase. Their wish is for you and your frenemies to form a circle pit and run until you create a tornado.

PERFORMER SPOTLIGHT 💡

Contentious Flowers is an indie folk band made up of Liberty High School sophomores Charlotte Neale and Becca Westmoreland. Their shared love for music began back in sixth grade when they first picked up their middle school band instruments - Charlotte on trombone and Becca on clarinet. Since then, they’ve performed a short etude together, participated in various Liberty bands, and developed a strong musical bond. Becca has been learning guitar for about a year and a half, performing at the 2024 Sound House Showcase and playing rhythm guitar for StriVe, while Charlotte began taking banjo lessons this past January. Inspired halfway through their freshman year by a performance from The Sunstones, the duo dreamed of starting their own band - and now that dream is finally becoming reality. (Full circle moment: The Sunstones’ bassist Julianne Carr will be playing alongside them at the showcase this year!) Contentious Flowers brings a lively folk sound to the stage with their guitar and banjo duets, aiming to have a great time, get the crowd grooving, and grow as musicians along the way.
