Thursday afternoon. The panel change on Elm Street turns into a full service upgrade.

Your best tech's already on another job, so you send Marcus; six months in, sharp, but nowhere near ready to run this alone.

Nobody decided to run it this way. The schedule got tight and he was who was free.

There's no line in your shop between green and ready. Just a feeling, held in whoever trained him last.

It mostly holds. Until the job that doesn't.

A written path fixes it: what a tech can run alone, and what still needs backup.

Marcus still goes to Elm Street. He just goes knowing exactly where he stands, because you already do.

"This is how we've always done it." You roll out something better.

A week later, it's dead.

Your crew's not fighting you.

They're just doing whatever gets the job done by five o'clock and right now, that's still the old way.

The notepad and the text thread are still faster than what you built. Fix that, and nobody has to remember the new way.

7:12 Monday morning, three ad campaigns running, the phone ringing twice back to back about the same panel upgrade, and nobody on either line able to say which ad brought either call in.

The fix is one question: how did you hear about us, asked the same way, every call, for a full quarter and tracking it.

No more wasted ad spend.

Six weeks in, the directory listing had brought in two calls and nothing else, so it got cut, and the two platforms actually pulling weight stayed.

The general contractor pointed at a wall and said the tenant moved it Tuesday.

Four boxes and the cable to feed them now belonged on a wall that was not on the plan the job was priced from. The general contractor said just do it and they would figure it out later.

He looked past the general contractor at his lead and a second-year apprentice, both standing there with the rough-in half done, waiting on an answer.

He said fine.

The lead spent the rest of Thursday and part of Friday laying out the new boxes and drilling framing that nobody had counted when the price was built.

Nothing on that job asked for a price in writing before the work went ahead. So nobody put a number on any of it.

He drove back thinking about February, when the final billing goes in and the general contractor is still holding retainage, and the only record of that Thursday is a few photos on his phone.

That panel upgrade got quoted at 14 hours.

It took 19, and the invoice went out at the original number anyway.

The customer paid, so nobody thought twice.

Your lead electrician didn't cut corners. The extra five hours just happened, and there was never a step built in to catch it before the file closed.

A customer called twice about a panel upgrade that should've taken one phone call.

The change order went from the lead electrician to the office as a text, same as it always does.

That day the CSR was juggling four other calls, and it slipped through.

Nobody dropped the ball on purpose.

The system that usually holds, a phone call here, a memory there, just didn't have any slack left to absorb it.

EVERYBODY’S AN ELECTRICIAN… UNTIL THEY’RE NOT 😂

Garfield gets it.

That little electrical problem may look like a quick fix, but sometimes the smartest DIY decision is knowing when not to DIY.

Skip the guesswork (and preferably the sparks) and call Dan Your Electrician.

You didn't think about your license until you were on your back in an ER exam room.

Waiting on an X-ray. The doctor asking how long you'd need to stay off a ladder.

Your head went straight to the open permits under your name, not the shoulder.

Your office manager didn't know what happens to those permits if you're out.
Your lead electrician didn't even know he could sit for the master exam.
Nobody had asked.

Six weeks later your shoulder was fine.

The two weeks before that were the ones that mattered.

The office took the call from the panel job a little after 11:00am.

The lead said the old conductors were short, that extending the existing circuits was going to take the rest of the day, and none of that time was in the estimate. The inspector was not coming until 3:00pm, and nothing gets done before the inspection.

The office wrote it in the job notes.

At 1:00pm they sent the journeyman over to help finish before dark. The journeyman's 2:00pm and 4:00pm stayed on the board where they were.

They moved them to Thursday at ten to 3:00pm, after the2:00pm customer had already called in asking where the electrician was.

The board gets set in the morning. There is nowhere in the day for what the field already knows to become a change to the board.

Your new journeyman called three times before ten, and none of it was about the electrical.

Which invoice line to use for a diagnostic when the customer already paid a trip charge. Whether he needed a photo of the panel label before he pulled the dead front. Who to tell that he was going to be late to the next call.

Twelve years in the trade, six weeks in your shop. He can troubleshoot a circuit faster than you can. What he does not know is how your shop runs a call. There is no place in the company where the way you run a service call is written down. It lives with whoever has been here the longest.

So your lead answers when he can, and you answer the rest, from a driveway, with your phone against your shoulder standing at a customer's house with the homeowner watching while you explain the invoice line to a guy forty minutes away, and you still haven't gotten to what you actually drove out there for.

None of those calls went on a ticket. Not his time sitting in the truck, and not yours.
