09/23/2022

We love this! The City of Evanston Illinois Government just announced it has adopted a new Bird-Friendly Building Design ordinance. The ordinance establishes bird safe standards for new development projects and alterations of existing buildings to help reduce bird collisions and death. These include measures to reduce light pollution.

"Migratory birds are a critical part of a healthy environment both locally and globally," said Mayor Daniel Biss. "I'm grateful to Bird-Friendly Evanston and our City staff for developing these important design standards, which will reduce aerial hazards and support a safe journey for the millions of native and migratory birds that fly through Evanston and the greater Chicago area each and every year.”

Evanston and the Chicago area serve as a vital corridor for migratory birds every spring and fall season, with light pollution and building components posing a significant hazard. The American Bird Conservancy estimates that collisions may kill up to one billion birds a year in the United States.

Learn more about how light pollution affects birds and other wildflife in this delightful picture book from dark sky advocate Paul Bogard, featuring beautiful watercolor illustrations from Sarah Holden.

Lewis describes the typical reaction she gets when she tells someone what she does for a living. “The first thing they say is, ‘Oh gosh, I love fireflies!’” Lewis said, conveying the joy in their voices. “The second is, ‘Why aren’t there as many as when I was a kid?’”

Part of the answer might be that people now spend more time in front of TV and computer screens rather than outside on hot summer nights.

“A famous firefly biologist used to say that if air conditioning hadn’t been invented, people would think there are more fireflies around,” Lewis said.

Sadly, however, it seems that many firefly species really are disappearing. Globally, the top threats to fireflies are loss of habitat; light pollution, which interferes with the signals used to find mates; and pesticides that are used to boost agricultural production."https://now.tufts.edu/2022/09/02/shedding-light-mysteries-fireflies

Even young children can celebrate the wonders of the night sky, including fireflies, and learn about the importance of dark skies. Check out What if Night? by dark sky advocate Paul Bogard and featuring gorgeous illustrations of the night sky and wildlife by artist Sarah Holden. https://keystonecanyon.com/products/what-if-night

Tufts biologist Sara Lewis has spent more than three decades studying fireflies and shedding light on their mysteries.

Today is International Literacy Day. Instead of banning books, we should be working towards improving literacy for everyone. Reading is a foundational skill, critical to future learning and to exercising our democratic freedoms, and young people deserve to see themselves reflected in a library's books.

""Get out into nature, see the universe beyond our own atmosphere, and it tells us that we are part of a larger universe. And when you see that, you feel awe," says Nordgren.

According to the 2018 study published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, experiencing awe can increase feelings of humility — making one kinder, more humble and more positive. One can feel this sense of awe after hiking a mountain, seeing the Milky Way or even experiencing other phenomena, like an eclipse."

Stargazing at a national park can be a great family bonding experience. Of course, we think Paul Bogard's What if Night?, with gorgeous watercolor illustrations of the night sky and wildlife by Sarah Holden, make the perfect accompaniment. Learn more at keystonecanyon.com.

We just learned about this fantastic learning experience for future pediatric doctors and young students and had to share!

"WesternU COMP College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific Pediatric Interest Group (PIG) hosted its first in-person Mini-Medical School since Fall 2019. Mini-Medical School has allowed WesternU COMP students to hone their skills as future pediatric physicians while inspiring youth, kindergarteners through second graders, to one day become doctors themselves.

The bi-annual event, held on Saturday, April 4, hosted about 60 kindergarten and second-grade students for the 2022 Mini-Medical School. About 35 COMP PIG students with an interest in pediatric medicine invested their time to create engaging activities for these young minds. They provided hands-on lessons in scrubbing-in, sutures, bones and X-rays, hearts sound and pulses, and medical equipment." https://news.westernu.edu/westernu-students-inspire-young-children-during-mini-medical-school/

If your child is interested in medicine, check out the latest in the Fields of Silver and Gold series, Pioneering Medicine: From Sage to Surgery, by John L. Smith. Today is Women's Equality Day.

"On Women’s Equality Day, we celebrate the trailblazers who fought to deliver a better future for America’s daughters. We recognize the work that remains to ensure that everyone can fully participate in our democracy and make fundamental choices about their health and bodies. We strive to uphold our Nation’s promise of equality for all people. "
