RHS Lady Indians fall to Franklin Pierce 45-39 in District tourney

In a low scoring first quarter the third-seeded Renton Lady Indians and the fifth-seeded Franklin Pierce Lady Cardinals scored most of the quarter’s points on free throws. The quarter ended with the Lady Cardinals leading 12-9. To end the quarter, Junior Darian Couper hit a 12-foot jumper at the buzzer after great ball movement by the Lady Indians. Renton ended the first quarter with seven fouls while Franklin Pierce had five fouls.

In the second quarter, the RHS Lady Indians had 10 fouls at the 4:50 minute mark and down 19-11. Good defense was played by both teams but there were also numerous reach-in fouls by both teams. Lady Indian Freshman Jesselle Victo Castillo netted a barely buzzer-beating half court three-pointer to close the deficit to three points, 22-19 at the end of the second quarter as the teams headed to their respective locker rooms to discuss second half strategy.

Darian Couper hit a 14-footer and then drained a three pointer to start the third quarter and gave Renton a 26-22 lead. Good half time adjustments by Renton Coach Tim White found his charges leading 33-29 after three quarters of play.

The fourth quarter started with a flurry of Franklin Pierce baskets to give them a lead. Renton hit a three-pointer, but the Lady Cardinals could not miss from the charity stripe and since they were in the double bonus, they were shooting two free throws for every Renton one-and-one. Free throws allowed Franklin Pierce to take a 39-38 lead halfway through the fourth quarter; a lead they would not relinquish.
The Lady Cardinals led 41-38 with 2:38 to go in the game. Four more charity tosses gave the visitors a 45-38 lead. Renton would hit a technical foul free throw to end the scoring at 45-39.

With the loss, third-seeded Renton now travels to Bellarmine Prep High School (Tacoma), on Tuesday, February 18, to face 11th-seeded Foster. Tip-off is at 6 p.m. The winner will play at Wilson High School (Tacoma), on Thursday, February 20, with tip-off at 7:45 p.m., versus the winner of eighth-seeded Washington and 10th-seeded Eatonville.

Renton Boy’s Basketball Indians advance in district tournament

The eighth seeded Renton High School Boy’s Basketball Team defeated the ninth seeded Bremerton Knights 63-56, at RHS, in the opening round of the West Central District 3 2A Boys Basketball Tournament on Thursday, February 13.

The game was a back and forth affair for most of the game with the biggest lead for either team being a meager four points. However, collecting every defensive rebound (and a handful of the offensive variety) coupled with two early fourth quarter steals and baskets expanded the Indian lead to double digits. With Renton being in the double bonus (two free throws for every foul) for most of the fourth quarter, the Indians canned their free throws down the stretch when they needed them to freeze out a furious Knight comeback for a 63-56 win and an advancement to the Saturday quarterfinal game.

The Indians advanced to a quarterfinal game at top seeded Lindbergh, on Saturday, February 15, with tip-off at 7 p.m.

The winner will play in a semifinal game on Thursday, February 20, at Rogers High School (Puyallup), with tip-off at 7:45 p.m. The loser will play Foster on Wednesday, February 19, at Curtis High School (University Place), with tipoff at 7:45 p.m. The home team will be the higher seeded team in the game.

Varsity

Senior Keandre Young scored two baskets in the paint to give Renton (14-6 overall, 9-4 league) an 8-5 lead over Highline (6-14 overall, 3-10 league) early. Also, in early quarter action, Senior Jamal Jamerson pumped in two jumpers and the Indians extended their lead to 12-9.

Both teams shared baskets for the rest of the quarter and the end of the quarter found the teams even at 14-14.

Two Freshman Isaiah Spear free throws and a Junior Tavionne Ervin runner in the lane gave Renton a three-point lead early in second quarter.

Two Jamal Jamerson charity tosses on two trips to the line and a Senior O’Shae Barquet floater propelled Renton to a 33-32 lead at the half. There were 10 lead changes or ties in the quarter. The Indians outscored the Pirates 19-18 in the second quarter.
There was intense back and forth third quarter action. Jamal Jamerson hits a jump hook in the lane to give Renton its biggest lead - eight points at 44-36.

Renton led 51-46 (18-14) after three quarters of play.

The fourth quarter started as a back and forth affair as the teams exchanged buckets and the lead six times before a pair of Highline free throws gave them a three-point lead with three minutes to play.

Renton was in the double bonus, so the Pirates shot free throws for the last four minutes of the game. O’Shae Barquet hits two free throws and then Keandre Young scores off a steal to give Renton a one-point lead 59-58 with less than two minutes left. Two Highline free throws and a put back gives them a 62-59 lead with 1:33 left.
Keandre Young hits an NBA range three-pointer to tie the game at 62 and then O’Shae Barquet hits a crowd roaring three-pointer to give the Indians a three-point lead – 65-62 with less than a minute remaining in the contest.

After a missed Renton free throw, Highline calls timeout with 18.9 seconds left and down by three points. The Indian defense holds; however, Renton misses a shot and Highline rebounds. But Keandre Young scores an easy layup off a Renton steal to seal the win with five seconds remaining. Highline hits a meaningless three at the buzzer and Renton wins an exciting Senior Night game - 67-65.

JV

Renton JV Indians start the game in a stifling 2-3 zone and lead 8-3 three minutes into the first quarter. JV Sophomore William Osborn IV knocks down two three-pointers and two free throws in the first four minutes. Osborn added an old fashioned three (basket and free throw) to push the score to 16-7 with two minutes and change left in the quarter.

Strong post play by Freshman Elijah Spear at both ends of the court helped his team both offensively and defensively including two put back baskets and a block.

Junior Nalu Kai McKinney netted two fast break buckets to help push the score to 24-11 late in the first quarter. Renton led Highline 26-13 after one quarter of play.

A run and gun Renton second quarter offense scored early and often. The JV Indians had a complete five player turnover in the quarter. However, clutch Highline free throws and a couple three-pointers kept the score within a 15-17-point Renton lead.
With a flurry of shots in the final minutes, Renton led as the teams exited for halftime - 51-24 (a 25-11 Renton quarter).

Renton JV Indian Sophomore Micah Davis started the second half with two straight long range three-pointers to push the Renton lead to 59-24.

The JV Indians scorched the net in the third quarter turning numerous turnovers by the Pirates into easy Renton points.
The Indians led after three quarters 85-27 (a 34-3 Renton quarter).

The fourth quarter started with a running clock due to the 48-point JV Indian lead.
With less than a minute remaining, Elijah Spear grabs two offensive rebounds and banks home a bucket to push the JV Indians over 100 points for the first time this season. Renton JV celebrates Senior Night with a 100-43 rout of Highline.

Power! RHS Lady Indians sweep Tyee Lady Totems in three games

On Wednesday, January 22, the Renton High School Lady Indians basketball teams (Varsity, JV and C-Team) hosted a conference foe – Tyee Lady Totems. The undefeated varsity bested Tyee 66-33; the JV Team (10-2) won 49-10 and the C-Team (3-0) completed the sweep routing Tyee 47-9.

Varsity

The varsity Lady Indian’s game versus Tyee started a tad slow as five minutes in the teams were deadlocked at 4-4. A block by Senior Solana Jackson on a Tyee fast break and three Senior Jamariana Smith three-pointers woke up the Renton offense. Her clutch shooting coupled with a lock-down smothering defense positioned Renton for a 24-10 first-quarter lead.

Renton (15-0 overall, and 9-0 in conference play) outscored Tyee 13-7 in the low scoring second quarter. Both teams pressing man-to-man defenses seemed to bother the other team. The Lady Indians hit another couple treys and cleaned the glass for a couple put-backs to lead 37-17 at the half.

Timely substitutions and rotations by Lady Indian Head Coach Tim White led to a fresh Lady Indian team in the third quarter. They traded basket for basket with the Lady Totems however, four of the Lady Indian buckets were long-range giving them a higher point aggregate for an equal number of shots. Renton led 52-27 after three quarters, posting a 15-10 third quarter.

Lady Indian Freshman Nyachang Luok helped Renton dominate the final quarter as she scored nine points on four baskets and a charity toss. She played solid post defense, added a block and three boards to her stat line.

The undefeated Renton High School Lady Indians play such a smooth game that it lulls the crowd to sleep and suddenly they are up by 30 points. Renton took the ‘W’ 66-33 and the final quarter 14-6.

JV

The JV RHS Lady Indians passed their way to lead the Tyee Lady Totems 13-2 after a quarter of action. The game was close through half of the initial quarter until Renton shot the lid off the basket and hit on its final five shots of the quarter to snare their 11-point lead.

Renton outscored Tyee 9-3 in the second quarter to lead 22-5 as the teams retired to their respective locker rooms for halftime. The Lady Indians' fast-break accounted for the majority of their second-quarter points. With many of the breaks, and pinpoint passing, leading to easy layups.

The Lady Indians cleaned the offensive window in the third quarter for board after board leading to an 11-2 quarter and an overall 33-7 lead 75 percent through the game. Aggressive, pressing Renton guard play led to numerous Tyee turnovers.

Renton scored early and often in the fourth quarter to secure their 49-10 victory. The Lady Indians outscored the Lady Totems 16-3 in the final quarter, their biggest scoring differential of the contest.

C-Team

The RHS C-Team Lady Indians defeated the Tyee Lady Totems 47-9.

Renton led at the end of the first quarter 10-3 and extended their lead to 12 at the half (19-7) with a 9-4 second quarter. With Coach Tammy Jackson-Cloy barking out orders and plays, the Lady Indians dominated the paint in the first half scoring over 60 percent of their buckets up close. An aggressive, man-to-man defense led to an impressive number of turnovers and Lady Indian second chances.

The Lady Indians dominated the third quarter, 14-2, scoring multiple points off turnovers coupled with great passes for easy buckets. RHS led after three quarters - 33-9.

The fourth quarter was all Renton as they notched a 14-0 shutout quarter to take a 47-9 victory. The Lady Indians dominated at cleaning the glass at both ends of the floor on the way to their lopsided win.
