The trees are starting to get some color up by Pelican Rapids. Blue sky and light winds after a cool start this morning. Only did 200 miles today, took a long lunch break in the state park. Came back through Maine, Phelps Mill and Underwood.

----- Ghost Town of Vicksburg -----
Rode to the ghost town of Vicksburg today down in the Minnesota River valley just north of Redwood Falls. Problem is there wasn't much of a river! I've been coming to this county park for 13 years and have never saw the water this low. I park at the old townsite with concrete foundations being the only remnant of what used to be here. A trading post was here in 1783 run by Charles Patterson, known as Patterson Rapids. In the mid 1800s Joseph Brown operated a freight line at this location. The village of Vicksburg was established in the late 1860s but was empty by 1905 when everyone moved to Renville as that's where the railroad was. In its hayday there was a general store, wagon shop, sawmill, blacksmith and a ferry to cross the river. It is still a cool place to visit and wonder what happened at the exact spot you are standing. Trip total 248.7 miles.

After careful consideration of the weather forecast for the next two days, it looked like Friday was the better option to attempt the 350 mile ride back to Alexandria. Problem was I forgot my Gore Tex gloves, and when your hands get wet in black leather gloves they turn black! My KLIM Gore Tex jacket, pants and boots all performed admirably as the first 50 miles were in moderate rain, past that it was decent. Trip total of 1,500 miles in 5 days!

Today was one of those days where you just go for a ride in the forest. Up, down, left, right, repeat for 290 miles. Didn't take a single photo, just this 29 second video of what the forest roads look like. Visited places like Kenton, Sidnaw, Covington, Amasa, Iron River, Marinesco, Lake Gogebic, Bergland. Too bad it had to end.

About 20 some miles out today I was welcomed by the scent of the pines as I rolled down Forest Highway 16 in the Ottawa National Forest. I slowly wound through the s- curves and took in the grandeur of the towering red pines. Crossing into Wisconsin my planned route across Vilas County threw me a detour, so I had to improvise and adapt. This meant taking some roads I've never been on before, which can lead to some great discoveries. Like WI 55 from Nelma down to Argonne. Epic road in the Nicolet National Forest along the east side of the Headwaters Wilderness. Another 250 miles today, the RT Limited is working well.

The rain down in Minnesota and Wisconsin today was coming up from the south so I decided to head north to escape it. Destination - the very tip of the Keweenaw Peninsula and Copper Harbor to where U.S. 41 starts. This is the end of the paved road, or the start of it. Distance today 261 miles. Day 1 of the Spyder U.P. 2021 run is complete! Just under 350 miles in almost 8 hours across Minnesota, Wisconsin and into the Western U.P. of Michigan. The RT Limited is starting to loosen up nicely now that it has 600 miles total. Nothing too exciting today on the road, a couple of wild turkey was about it for wildlife, couple of road construction zones, not much traffic. Took the scenic route through Little Falls, Pierz, Hinckley, Danbury, Minog, Hayward, Clam Lake, Mellen, Hurley, Bergland. Blue skies, sunshine, great day for a ride!
